AUSTIN, Texas — Junior guard Sug Sutton's 14-point effort guided No. 13/12 Texas (11-2, 1-0) past Oklahoma State (9-3, 0-1), 60-51, in the Longhorns' Big 12 Conference opener at the Frank Erwin Center on Wednesday night. Senior guard Danni Williams scored 11 points with eight rebounds and junior forward Joyner Holmes chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds.
Williams opened the scoring with a 3-pointer and Holmes sank a pair of baskets to gave Texas an early 7-0 lead, as the Longhorn defense held Oklahoma State scoreless for the first six minutes of the game. With both teams struggling to build momentum on offense, the Cowgirls sank a pair of jumpers to cut the Longhorn lead to four late in the first frame. Texas followed with a 10-point run, punctuated by Williams 3-pointer to open the second period, to extend the lead to 13 (17-4). Oklahoma State narrowed the gap to six (20-14) with 4:50 remaining in the first half, but the Longhorns closed out the half with 13-2 run to carry a 33-16 lead into the locker room.
The Longhorns extended the lead to 19 (48-29) at the third quarter and pushed the advantage 20 (52-32) on a layup by senior forward Jatarie White with 8:10 remaining in the game. But a seven-minute scoring drought in the fourth quarter allowed the Cowgirls to storm back, as they reeled off a 15-point run to cut the margin to five (52-47) with a minute left to play. A pair free throws by sophomore guard Destiny Littleton ended the OSU run.
