AUSTIN, Texas — Sophomore guard Matt Coleman III registered a season-high 22 points to lead the Texas Men's Basketball team to a 72-68 win against No. nr/24 Purdue (6-4) on Sunday night at the Frank Erwin Center. Coleman, who was just three points shy of his career high (25 vs. Nevada on March 16, 2018), also set season highs in field goals made (7-11) and three-point field goals made (3-5) and tied his season high in free throws made (5-6).
Freshman forward Jaxson Hayes contributed 14 points and three blocks. Senior guard Kerwin Roach II and junior guard Elijah Mitrou-Long each added 10 points in the victory.
Carsen Edwards led Purdue with 40 points (15-26 FG, 7-14 threes). The performance tied for the second-highest point total by a visiting player in Erwin Center history (since the 1977-78 season).
Senior forward Dylan Osetkowski and Roach II opened up the scoring with a pair of three-pointers, and Texas led 6-5 at the 16:28 mark. Another Roach three gave the Longhorns a seven-point advantage (28-21) with 3:53 remaining. The Longhorns entered the locker room with a 36-31 at the break.
Purdue opened the second half with a 7-0 run, taking a 38-36 lead at the 17:31 mark. Strong play from Mitrou-Long and Hayes allowed the Longhorns to claim a 53-47 advantage at the 10:27 mark. Edwards scored eight straight points for the Boilermakers to give Purdue a 57-55 edge with 7:00 left. An Edwards three tied the contest 60-60 at the 3:57 mark.
Leading 67-65, Coleman knocked down a jumper and later added a free throws to give the Longhorns a 70-68 cushion with 21 seconds left. Texas forced a Purdue turnover on the ensuing possession, and Mitrou-Long knocked down a pair of free throws with 4.9 seconds remaining to seal the win.
