AUSTIN, Texas— Freshman guard Audrey Warren recorded a career-high 21 points as No. 12 Texas (7-2) lost to No. 9 Tennessee (8-0), 88-82, on Sunday afternoon at the Frank Erwin Center. Warren was the first Texas freshman to record a 20-plus point performance since current junior Joyner Holmes in 2016-17.
Senior guard Danni Williams also posted a solid outing, registering 14 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
Junior guard Sug Sutton and sophomore guard Destiny Littleton joined Warren and Williams among the double-figure ranks, scoring 11 and 13, respectively. The Texas bigs also contributed solid outings. Senior center Jatarie White recorded nine points and five rebounds while senior forward Olamide Aborowa chipped in eight points and four rebounds.
Warren was clicking early, accounting for 12 of Texas' first 16 points as the Longhorns jumped out to a 16-10 lead at the 3:23 mark of the first quarter. The Longhorns finished out the quarter on a high note, holding the Lady Volunteers without a made field goal over the last 4:04 and ending the last 2:52 of the quarter with a 7-2 run. Texas would extend their lead to nine, 23-14, at the end of the first period of play.
Texas' offense was quiet to start the second quarter as Tennessee stormed back with a 6-0 run to cut the Texas lead to just two, 27-25, at the 6:14 mark. The shooting woes for the Longhorns persisted throughout the second quarter as Texas shot just 17.6 percent (3-17 FGs) in the second period, allowing the Lady Volunteers to take a five-point lead, 40-35, into the locker room at intermission.
Williams caught fire at the start of the second half, connecting on two three-pointers to cut the deficit to two, 54-52, at the 4:29 mark of the third quarter. Tennessee would take a five-point lead, 62-57, into the final quarter. Another Williams three-pointer would cut the Tennessee lead to just one, 74-73, with just 2:59 remaining in the game. Sutton would finish a driving layup and get fouled but would not connect on the ensuing free throw attempt as Texas trailed 83-80 with 23.4 seconds left in the game.
