Windle sets NCAA record at Big 12 Championships

Freshman Jordan Windle breaks NCAA men’s platform diving record by nearly 20 points.

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas freshman Jordan Windle shattered the NCAA record in the men's platform diving event to put an exclamation point on the Horns' 39th consecutive conference title Saturday night at the Big 12 Championships.
Windle, a Cambodian-born two-time World Championships qualifier for Team USA, netted 579.60 points through the six-round men's platform final and eclipsed the previous NCAA record of 560 points held by former Duke diver Nick McCrory.
Windle garnered multiple perfect 10 scores on four of his six dives in Saturday's final. He totaled 96 points on his first dive, an inward three-and-a-half somersault before totaling 92.40 points in round two with his back three-and-a-half somersault. Windle posted an incredible score of 111 points on his inward four-and-a-half somersault with perfect scores from six of the seven judges.
He compiled 86.40 points in round four before going over 100 once more on his reverse three-and-a-half somersault for 102 points. He capped his incredible performance with his back two-and-a-half somersault with two-and-a-half twists for 91.80 points.
"I'm still wowed by it," Windle said. "A lot happened in this competition so I'm still trying to take it all in, but I'm really ecstatic about coming out on top and setting an NCAA record. The prelims definitely built my confidence. I was trying to build off of prelims and dive well there. Then when I got into finals, I didn't expect all of this. Being able to dive my best was just incredible."
Sophomore Jacob Cornish, the one-meter champion from Wednesday, finished as the runner-up on platform with 446.55 points.
Texas won its 39th consecutive conference title with 1,052 points. West Virginia placed second with 947.5 points while TCU took third with 667.5 points.
Junior Tate Jackson was voted as the Men's Swimmer of the Meet, and Windle was tabbed as the Men's Diver of the Meet and the Men's Newcomer of the Meet. UT's Eddie Reese was voted as the Men's Swimming Coach of the Meet.
Freshman Austin Katz kicked off the swimming finals with a meet record in the 200 backstroke. The Sarasota, Florida, native swept the backstroke events with his 1:39.10 in the final. Senior Jonathan Roberts finished as the runner-up at 1:39.76 while sophomore Ryan Harty took third at 1:40.77. Junior Jeff Newkirk placed fourth at 1:42.02 and sophomore Josh Artmann added a fifth-place mark of 1:42.59.
Junior Tate Jackson snagged the school record in the 100 freestyle during the preliminary around lowered it further in the final. The Austin native clocked 41.42 seconds in prelims to take down the school mark of 41.49 set by Jimmy Feigen at the 2009 NCAA Championships. Jackson, who won the 50 freestyle on Thursday, completed a sweep of the sprint freestyle events with his new school and Big 12 mark of 41.27 in the final.
Senior Brett Ringgold followed closely behind in second at 42.06 while freshman Parker Neri took fourth in 44.05. Sophomore Jacob Huerta won the event's consolation final in 43.39.
Freshman Chris Yeager won his first conference title and became the eighth-fastest Longhorn ever in the 1,650 freestyle. Yeager took the win at 14:48.01. His classmate JohnThomas Larson followed in second at 15:07.61.
All-America senior Joseph Schooling led from start to finish in the 200 butterfly and held off West Virginia's David Dixon for the win at 1:42.23. Freshman Sam Pomajevich placed third in 1:44.38.
Texas capped the evening with its victory in the 400 freestyle relay, as Haas, Ringgold, Newkirk and Jackson finished in
Junior Casey Melzer added a second-place mark of 1:56.06 in the 200 breaststroke. Junior Sam Stewart placed fourth at 1:57.83 and senior Austin Temple took sixth in 1:59.11.
