AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Track & Field splits up for the first time this season with a pair of meets on the horizon that will pit some of the nation's best against each other. The distance crew heads to the Husky Classic at Washington for a meet that has become the top meet for qualifying for the NCAA Championships the last few years. The rest of the team heads to the Tyson Invitational at Arkansas where the best sprinters and jumpers will face each other over two days. Texas enters the weekend after some strong showings at the New Mexico Classic and hope to take that momentum with them to Seattle and Fayetteville.
Both meets have two days full of action scheduled and fans can watch each of them online. The Tyson Invitational will be available on espn3.com or through the ESPN app on SEC Network+. The Husky Classic will be streamed online by FloTrack.org.
The Tyson Invitational starts at 1 p.m. with field events and the running events start at 1:30. Saturday's slate from Arkansas starts at 11 a.m. with the women's pole vault and running events start at 1. Fans can keep up with the action online with live results provided by FlashResults.com.
Action at the Husky Classic starts at 6 p.m. Central on Friday, but Texas is not expected to run its only event of the day until 7:25. Saturday's schedule kicks off at 11 a.m. Central. Live results from Husky will be available at GoHuskies.com. A link also is available on TexasSports.com on the team's schedule page.
Events to Watch
Tyson Invitational
• Men's Long Jump: This event will be a preview of the NCAA Championships with an amazing 7 of the top 9 jumpers in the nation taking the runway against each other. Texas boasts 2 of the top jumpers in Steffin McCarter (No. 5) and O'Brien Wasome (No. 7). The Longhorns will see elite competition from Florida, Arkansas and Akron in this event.
• Women's 60m: Junior Teahna Daniels makes her season debut in this event. The 2016 NCAA champion has only run the 200m so far this season. She will be up against a strong field that includes 5 of the top 6 in the NCAA this season.
• Women's 60m Hurdles: Again, the hurdles will be a featured event at the Tyson Invitational. 10 of the top 16 in the NCAA are expected to be in the field this weekend, including Longhorns Rushelle Burton and Pedrya Seymour.
• Women's Pole Vault: Another event that will be a preview of the NCAA Championships, the pole vault will feature 10 of the top 16 (6 of top 7), including 2 who currently rank among the Top 10 in collegiate history. Senior Kally Long stands at No. 12 this season and will also see some Big 12 foes in this competition from Kansas.
Husky Classic
• Men's Mile: After freshman Sam Worley won the mile last week at the New Mexico Classic, he and junior Alex Rogers have their sights set on even faster times. Worley's time of 4:03.91 converted to 3:58.60 due to altitude and Rogers stands at 4:00.39. With fast races expected at Washington, they will be on the hunt to lower their times an increase their chances of qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Texas is looking for its first sub-4 mile since Joe Stilin broke the school record in 2013.
• Women's 3000m: Sophomore Destiny Collins leads a group of Longhorns in this event and is coming off a victory last week in New Mexico. Fast times are anticipated in this event every year at Husky Classic. Last year, 9 of the top 15 times in the NCAA were posted at this meet. The Husky Classic is where 3k runners look to qualify for NCAAs with nearly 80 entries.
Texas Track & Field Notebook
Caldwell Breaks School Record
• After flirting with the school record in the weight throw the last 2 meets, senior Lauryn Caldwell finally broke through and set the new standard for Texas at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.
• Caldwell registered a throw of 18.84 meters (61-9.75) on her first throw of the competition to break the previous record of 18.56m held by Jordyn Brown since 2009. Caldwell was 5 inches short of the record at the Texas A&M Quadrangular (1/20) and then came just 3 inches short at the Texas Tech Classic (1/27).
• Her throw also moves her to No. 4 on the Big 12 list this season and not far behind No. 3.
• Caldwell now ranks in the Top 10 in school history in all but 1 throwing event (javelin). An improvement of less than 10 feet would put her on that list, too.
Texas Ranked Among Nation's Best
• Texas Track & Field is again among the top programs in the NCAA this season with the men and women both ranked in the Top 15 of the latest USTFCCCA Rankings.
• The women are currently No. 9 in the nation according to the rankings formula with 5 athletes ranked in the Top 10 in their respective events.
• The men are No. 16 in this week's rankings with 4 athletes in the Top 10 of their events.
• The Big 12 Conference is well represented with 3 men's teams in the Top 25, including Texas Tech (2) and Kansas (23). For the women, Texas leads the way with Baylor (16), Iowa State (21) and Kansas State (22) joining the Longhorns in the Top 25.
Worley Wins Mile Debut
• Freshman Sam Worley had the performance of the week for the Texas men winning the men's mile at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic with a time of 4:03.91. When the altitude conversion is applied to his time, he now has an NCAA time of 3:58.60.
• That time currently leads the Big 12 Conference and stands at No. 14 in the NCAA this season with the top 16 qualifying for the national meet.
• Worley went head-to-head with UTEP's All-American Jonah Koech and stormed from behind over the final 200 meters to overtake Koech at the line.
• His victorious move earned him the FloTrack Kick of the Week, the site's weekly honor that recognizes the top finishing move to a win.
Vaulters Climb National List
• Senior Kally Long posted a season-best height of 4.27 meters (14-0.00) to finish in 4th place in the pole vault at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic. She was the top collegian in the field with a number of post-collegiate athletes in action, including an Olympian.
• Her vault ranks her 9th in the NCAA this season and 10 centimeters behind the Big 12 lead.
• Redshirt junior Barrett Poth also cleared his highest bar of the season at the New Mexico Classic and finished as the top collegiate in the meet with a post-collegiate athlete winning.
• Poth took 2nd place with a clearance of 5.38m (17-7.75) to now stand at No. 15 on the NCAA list and is No. 4 in the Big 12 Conference.
Bruckner Breaks Through in Shot Put
• Sophomore Elena Bruckner put herself in a spot that could qualify for the national championship meet with her 3rd-place finish in the shot put at the New Mexico Classic.
• Bruckner posted a toss of 16.78m (55-0.75) for a new PR and now stands at No. 12 on the NCAA list and is 2nd in the Big 12 Conference.
Burt Leads Big 12 in Hurdles
• On the track at the New Mexico Classic, junior John Burt led a trio of Longhorns to new PRs in the 60m hurdles.
• Burt took 2nd place in a new PR time of 7.81 seconds. That time helps him hold onto the No. 1 spot in the Big 12.
• Sophomore Isaiah Lucas also posted 2 PRs on the day, improving in the semifinals and final round of the hurdles. He finished fourth overall with his time of 8.12 seconds.
• Sophomore Medric Roberson posted a new PR of 8.07 in the semifinals and would finish 6th in the final at 8.15.
• Roberson now ranks No. 5 in the Big 12 and Lucas is No. 8 to give Texas potential for a point-grab at the conference championship meet as multi-event athlete George Patrick also stands 9th on the list.
