AUSTIN, Texas – No. 16 Texas (5-2) won the doubles point and added five singles wins in a 6-1 victory over Utah State (4-3) Friday evening.
Friday's match began outdoors at Texas Tennis Center and relocated indoors to Weller Tennis Center midway through singles due to rain.
Texas posted wins at the third and first doubles positions to lock up the doubles point. Junior Colin Markes teamed up with sophomore Yuya Ito to knock off the Aggies' Sergiu Bucur and Felipe Acosta at third doubles, 6-3.
Texas' fourth-ranked tandem of juniors Rodrigo Banzer and Leonardo Telles nailed down the doubles point with their 6-2 win over Jaime Barajas and Jose Carvajal at first doubles. The remaining match at second doubles was suspended.
Ito extended the Longhorns' lead to 2-0 prior to the match relocation with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Samuel Serrano at second singles. Utah State sliced the Horns' lead to 2-1 with a straight-sets win at sixth singles before UT sophomore Christian Sigsgaard finished off Carvajal at fourth singles, 6-2, 7-5 for a 3-1 Texas lead.
Texas' Telles was unable to convert a couple of match points in his third-set tiebreaker, but he ultimately locked up the Longhorns' team victory with his 6-1, 7-6 (7) win over Bucur at third singles.
UT pushed its lead to 5-1 behind Harrison Scott's 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6) victory over Barajas at first singles. Banzer finished off the 6-1 victory with his 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Valdemar Holm at fifth singles.
