Sophomore catcher Taylor Ellsworth hit a sixth-inning HR to back Brooke Bolinger’s 10-K shutout
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Sophomore catcher Taylor Ellsworth blasted a sixth-inning solo HR and junior pitcher Brooke Bolinger flirted with a no-hitter for 5.1 innings in helping guide Texas softball (9-10) to a 1-0 victory over UTSA (10-9) on a chilly Wednesday night at Roadrunner Field.
Bolinger was terrific from the circle for the Longhorns, striking out a career-high-tying 10 while tossing her first career one-hitter and second complete-game shutout of 2018.
The UT offense registered nine hits in the match-up, powered by Ellsworth's 1-for-3 effort with her third HR of the campaign. Freshman third baseman MK Tedder (2-for-4) and junior right fielder Kay Kay Hayter (2-for-4) both led the squad with two hits at the plate.
Texas' offense wasted no time getting threats started in each of the first two innings against UTSA starter Madison Moore, posting a pair of singles during both frames. Unfortunately for the Longhorns, UT couldn't locate the key hit needed to jump to an early lead on the road.
With Bolinger holding UTSA hitless through three while allowing only a pair of base runners (walk and error), Texas again tried to manufacture a threat as junior designated player Bekah Alcozer and sophomore shortstop Kaitlyn Slack registered consecutive base knocks with two outs in the top of the fourth. Once again, Moore got herself out a jam in the circle by inducing a chopper to short as Texas' left stranded count expanded to six.
UTSA broke up a streak of seven straight retired by Bolinger with two down in the fourth as second baseman Hailey Garza was hit by a pitch. That was all the Roadrunners could get, though, as Texas' left-hander punched out designated player Candice Hadd for strikeout number five.
The Burnt Orange & White finally broke through on the scoreboard starting the top of the sixth as Ellsworth blasted a solo home run over the wall in center to make it 1-0.
Bolinger's no-hit bid finally ended with one down in the bottom of the sixth as center fielder Bailee Baldwin drove a clean single up the middle. UTSA shortstop Ashlynn Walls sent a quick buzz through the home crowd by following with a shot to deep right. Texas' Hayter drifted back and managed to make a catch just short of the wall for a loud second out. Just seconds later, the Longhorns defense made another important play as Tedder dropped to a knee to rob a single from her UTSA counterpart Rylee Rodriguez and fired a strike across the diamond to end the frame.
With UTSA down to its last chance at the plate, Bolinger quickly rolled through 5-6-7 in the Roadrunner order by striking out the side to end the one-run triumph.
