Baseball rallies for three in ninth to down No. 16 Oklahoma, 7-6
04.13.2018 | Baseball
The Longhorns trailed by two in the final inning before a two-run Masen Hibbeler double put them ahead.
NORMAN, Okla.—Trailing since the third inning, Texas Baseball (23-13, 10-3 Big 12) rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to down No. 16 Oklahoma (25-12, 8-2) by a 7-6 final score on Friday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
The Longhorns got on the board first in the ballgame when David Hamilton helped manufacture a run. The shortstop drew a leadoff walk and promptly stole his 19th base of the season. After a groundout moved him to third, DJ Petrinsky lifted a sac fly and the Longhorns led, 1-0.
Oklahoma answered back in the third, however, off starter Bryce Elder. A leadoff walk turned into a two-run homer off the bat of Steele Walker and Texas went behind, 2-1.
The Sooners then tacked on a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings to go out in front 4-1 on the Longhorns. In the top of the sixth, Kody Clemens drove his 10th homer of the season over the right field wall to pull Texas back within two.
In the bottom of the sixth, Oklahoma regained its three-run advantage, this time with a run off reliever Kamron Fields.
Texas answered in the top of the seventh after Petrinsky tripled and Duke Ellis drove him in with an RBI single but in the home half of the frame, OU added another and led, 6-3, after seven.
Zach Zubia hit his seventh home run of the season in the top of the eighth and the Longhorns went to the ninth trailing by two.
Petrinsky led off the top of the ninth with a walk and Michael McCann entered as a pinch-runner. Ellis then followed with a single to put two aboard for Texas. With one out, Tate Shaw drove a 1-2 offering into left-center to score McCann and give the Longhorns runners on the corners. After an OU pitching change and with speed on the bases, Masen Hibbeler doubled in the gap to plate both runners and put the Longhorns on top, 7-6.
Andy McGuire (5) entered in relief in the bottom of the frame and, after allowing an infield single to the leadoff hitter, shut the door for his fifth save of the series to give Texas a win in the series opener.
Matteo Bocchi (2-0) earned the win after a scoreless eighth. Texas finished with 12 hits on the night with multi-hit games from Hibbeler, Ellis, and Hamilton.
The two teams return to action tomorrow night with an 8 p.m. contest at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Chase Shugart is set to take the hill for Texas, with the game scheduled for broadcast on ESPNU.
