Back-to-Back: No. 7 Women's Golf wins second consecutive Big 12 Championship
04.22.2018 | Women's Golf
The Longhorns place three golfers in the individual top-10 en route to the league championship.
DALLAS - Three Texas women's golfers placed in the top-10 individually and the No. 7 Longhorns won their second consecutive Big 12 Conference Championship on Sunday at the Dallas Athletic Club, becoming the first team to win back-to-back Big 12 Conference Championships since 2008-09.
Texas totaled a 16-over-par 880 (295-292-293) to win its fifth all-time Big 12 Conference Championship. Oklahoma State (292-297-299) and Baylor (288-300-300) each tied for second with 24-over-par 888s. UT led the tournament field in both par-three (3.12, +7) and par-five (4.85, -9) scoring. The Longhorns also recorded the most pars (165) and eagles (3) among all teams in the Big 12 Championship.
The Longhorns won back-to-back Big 12 Conference Championships, becoming the first team since Oklahoma State in 2008 and 2009 to win two in a row. Texas has won Big 12 Conference Championships in 1997, 2004, 2011, 2017 and 2018. For head coach Ryan Murphy, this marks his eighth all-time tournament team victory in his four seasons leading the program.
"It's special and it's fun," Murphy said. "We've got a good golf conference so it feels good to win it back-to-back. Right now, it obviously means that we're the best team in our conference and that feels good."
Texas golfers Emilee Hoffman, Kaitlyn Papp and Sophia Schubert all earned spots on the Big 12 All-Tournament Team for placing in the top-10 individually.
Hoffman finished second individually for the second consecutive year at the Big 12 Championship, recording an even-par 216 (71-70-75). She totaled the most eagles (2) and the best par-three average (3.00, E) of all teams among the individual tournament field. It is Hoffman's fourth career top-two finish.
Papp, a freshman competing in her first Big 12 Conference Championship, tied for fourth with a three-over-par 219 (74-74-71). Her final-round 71 marked her team-leading 17th round at par or better this season. It was Papp's eighth top-10 finish this season in 11 events. She has finished among the top-10 in all six events she has played this spring.
Schubert recorded her sixth top-10 finish in as many events this season with a six-over-par 222 (75-70-77). She led the field with 37 total pars and also had seven birdies on the weekend.
Sophomore Greta Isabella Voelker tied for 22nd overall with a 12-over-par 228 (76-78-74) and freshman Agathe Laisne tied for 26th with a 13-over-par 229 (75-81-73). Both Voelker and Laisne played their best rounds of the weekend on the final 18 holes Sunday.
Texas returns to action when it competes in the NCAA Regional May 7-9 at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin. The complete NCAA regional field will be announced Wednesday, April 25 at 4:30 p.m. CT on Golf Channel.
POST-BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP QUOTES
TEXAS HEAD COACH RYAN MURPHY
On Texas winning the Big 12 Conference Championship for the second consecutive year …
"It's special and it's fun. It was not going to be easy getting past Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Baylor. We've got a good golf conference so it feels good to win it back-to-back. Right now, it obviously means that we're the best team in our conference and that feels good."
On the resolve of his team throughout the Big 12 Championship …
"Resolve is a great word. We didn't start well. We started slow, but we maintained through round one, we maintained through round two and then finished round two off really, really strongly. To come out today, I knew that we needed help at the back end of the lineup with Agathe [Laisne] and Greta [Voelker] and they came through like the good players that they are. With Emilee [Hoffman], when you play with the lead, you play with a lot of pressure and that's always a tough position. If you've never been in that position, I can tell you that it's tough. You have a lot of nerves and it takes experience being there a few times before you just come out and knock it out. Collectively, it was a great team performance today. Pappy [Kaitlyn Papp] showed up with 71. It was just a fantastic team effort."
On what it says about Texas being the first Big 12 school to win back-to-back conference titles since 2008-09 …
"I think it says a lot about our team currently. We had a great team last year. We probably have a lot better team this year if you just look at the numbers - stroke averages and rankings - top to bottom. Our top-five can compete with anybody in the country."
SOPHOMORE EMILEE HOFFMAN
On Texas winning the 2018 Big 12 Championship …
"It's just an amazing feeling. We've been working so hard this season and this is what we work for. It's just a great feeling to win back-to-back with my team."
On her second-place finish at the 2018 Big 12 Championship …
"I've been working really hard and I got second here as well last year, so it's nice to finish second again. Obviously, I had a chance to win and I would have liked to win, but I'm just going to keep work hard and keep doing everything I can, and hopefully come out on top."
