05.07.2018 | Women's Golf
Three Longhorns shoot under par and Texas finishes 7-under for the round.
Three Texas golfers turned in rounds under par and the No. 8 Longhorns hold the team lead following the opening day of the NCAA Austin Regional on Monday at the UT Golf Club.
As a team, Texas shot a seven-under-par 281, which is tied for the 10th-best team total in program history. It marked the 12th time in program history that UT shot seven-under or better for an 18-hole round. The Longhorns hold a three-stroke lead over No. 3 Arkansas, which shot a four-under-par 284. No. 11 Michigan State is in third place with a three-under-par 285.
Texas led the tournament field on both par-three (2.75, -5) and par-four (4.02, +1) scoring. The Longhorns had the second-most birdies of any team in the field on Monday with 18.
Senior Sophia Schubert is tied for second place individually with a three-under-par 69. It was her fifth sub-70 score of the season. Schubert tied for the best average on par-three holes among the tournament field (2.50, -2). She totaled five birdies and 11 pars. Texas A&M's Maddie Szeryk holds the individual lead by one stroke with a four-under-par 68.

POST-ROUND QUOTES
Ryan Murphy, Texas Head Coach (team leader at -7): "I thought it was a great start to the golf tournament. Minus-seven on this course is really good. I'm happy about that. It was a really solid effort. We didn't make a birdie until our sixth hole collectively today. That's rare to have five clean scorecards through five holes. That tells you the team was very focused when they started today and, for the most part, maintained it throughout the round."
Maddie Szeryk, Texas A&M (individual leader at -4): "Today's round really helped our team a lot. I stuck with it today. I had two bogeys on my back nine (the front nine of the course, as she teed off at No. 10), but I kept fighting. I was hitting it pretty well throughout the day, so I gave myself chances on most every hole. Starting the round, I had two birdies in a row (at 13 and 14), making an eight-footer at the first one and four or five feet at the next hole, and I stayed really confident throughout the round."
(On her eagle on the par-5 fifth hole): "I hit a good drive and hit 3-wood into the green. I was between 3-wood and 5-wood, so I hit just hit 3-wood up there. It took one hop and hit the flag and came down to about three feet. The putt was a three-footer for eagle."
(Overall): "It was pretty exciting to open play in my fourth NCAA Regional. It's a really nice golf course here and a nice way to end my NCAA Regional career. Hopefully, we'd like to move on and compete at another event to close the season (at the NCAA Championships)."
Gurleen Kaur, Baylor (-3): "I was not hitting my driver well this morning, so I accepted that from the start. My mindset was to make sure everything else was working, so my chipping and putting were so good today. I've never chipped and putted so well. I missed four or five greens, but I made sure I got up and down every time. I didn't make a bogey all day. I missed birdie putts on the first and second hole, both from about 10 feet, but I felt like I was really on from the start. Overall, we have two more rounds to play, so we need to keep this momentum going. We need to play one shot at a time over the next two days and hope for the best."
Sophia Schubert, Texas (-3): "I felt pretty good about it. My game was good. I birdied my second hole. I hit the ball pretty well and hit most of the fairways. We're so excited to play on our home course and have all of our family and friends come out and watch. It's a good spot to be in. You can't win it on the first day, but you can lose it."
Greta Isabella Voelker, Texas (-2): "I thought it was really good. It wasn't playing that easy today and I'm happy that my team played that well. [My putting] went good today. It wasn't perfect today, but I made a lot of good putts."
