Piperi to represent Team USA at IAAF World U20 Championships

Tripp Piperi won USATF Junior Outdoors to qualify for this week’s meet in Tampere, Finland.
TAMPERE, Finland - University of Texas' Tripp Piperi will represent Team USA this week at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland. Piperi won the 6kg shot put at USATF Junior Outdoors in Bloomington, Indiana in June to qualify.
The meet begins on Tuesday and runs through Sunday. The 6kg men's shot put will be contested on Tuesday. Piperi is the top qualifier in group A with his winning throw of 21.50m at USA Juniors. Piperi's group will begin at 9:10 am local time (1:10 am CT) on Tuesday. The group B qualification round will start at 10:24 am local time (2:24 am CT).
The top 12 performers, or those with a qualifying throw of at least 19.60m, will qualify for the finals. The finals of the 6kg shot put begin at 6:10 pm local time (10:10 am CT). Entering the competition, Piperi's qualifying throw of 21.50m is second-best in the field behind South Africa's Kyle Blignaut who qualified with a mark of 21.65m. USA's Jordan West (University of Tennessee) joins Piperi and Blignaut as the only other competitor with a qualifying mark over 21.00m entering this week's World Championships.
Piperi enjoyed a standout freshman campaign on the Forty Acres, winning the shot put at both indoor and outdoor Big 12 Championships. He then won NCAA West Prelims in the event and finished fourth at NCAA Outdoors. Piperi finished seventh at NCAA Indoors in the shot put. In addition to his victory at USATF Junior Outdoor Championships, which qualified him for the IAAF World U20 Championships, Piperi threw at USATF Outdoor Championships as well this summer.
A native of The Woodlands, Texas, Piperi was named to the 2017-18 Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team.
