Texas music legend kicks off football gameday concert series on LBJ Lawn
Austin, Texas -- Texas Athletics is proud to announce Texas music legend and Grammy Award-winning artist Jimmie Vaughan as the inaugural headliner of Longhorn City Limits, taking place prior to Texas Football's home opener versus Tulsa on Saturday, Sept. 8. Vaughan, whose musical career has been at the center of the Austin music scene for over five decades, was honored by both the Texas House and Senate as the Texas State Musician for 2015. That same year, he also had the pleasure of accepting the honor of induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on behalf of his late brother, Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Joining Vaughan on the lineup are very special guests The Nightowls. The Austin soul dynamos first shook up the Austin scene in 2014 with an incendiary debut album and their sweat-soaked, revue-style showmanship and choreography. The 10-piece band fervently spreads the gospel of classic R&B and soul around the country with regional and national tours. This spring and summer they've been touring coast to coast to support their newest release "We Are The Nightowls".
"It's so exciting and so appropriate to have an award-winning artist like Jimmie Vaughan headline our inaugural Longhorn City Limits," said Vice President and Director of Athletics Chris Del Conte. "Celebrating the Austin music scene was at the heart of our initial conversations about a concert series, and with Jimmie Vaughan and The Nightowls, we have accomplished that goal from the onset."
"What an honor to play once again for The University Of Texas," added Jimmie Vaughan. "It was our pleasure getting to play at halftime with the Longhorn Band in 2015. I am excited to be back on the Forty Acres!"
With the brand new concert series Longhorn City Limits, Texas Football gamedays have become the center of the "Live Music Capital of the World." Longhorn City Limits will take place at every home game on the LBJ Lawn outside the northeast corner of DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium. All concerts are FREE admission and open to the public.
"Austin is The Live Music Capital of the World, so it makes perfect sense that we integrate a concert series into every Texas home football game," said Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs Drew Martin. "We partnered with the premiere live music festival company in Austin-based C3 Presents to not only bring the concept of Longhorn City Limits to life, but set the gold standard in pregame entertainment for our loyal fans."
Stubb's BBQ and additional concession options are available on a game-by-game basis. Fans can also enjoy happy hour pricing* at Longhorn City Limits including $5 16-oz. domestic beers, $6 16-oz. premium beers and $5 wine spritzers.
