Junior forward Cyera Hintzen scored twice, including a “golden goal” at 92:38, to defeat the Knights
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – On a beautiful Friday evening at Finley South Field, No. 21 Texas soccer (2-0-1) got a brace (two goals) from junior forward Cyera Hintzen, while also dominating the second half and overtime periods, to knock off No. 23 UCF (0-1-0), 2-1 (OT).
The Knights entered the contest listed at No. 23 in the United Soccer Coaches poll but were rated as high as No. 14 in the most recent release of the Top Drawer Soccer national rankings.
Before this season, only twice previously in program history (1998 & 2003) had the Longhorns played their first three matches of a campaign away from the friendly confines of Mike A. Myers Stadium, going 2-1 in each instance. This year's squad improved on that mark by registering an unbeaten record (2-0-1) over the three-match stretch with a 3-0 win at Rice, a 1-1 (2OT) tie at No. 4 North Carolina and the victory over the nationally-ranked Knights.
Hintzen's two goals improved her team-leading total to four over Texas' initial three contests of 2018. The Garland, Texas, native now owns eight career match-winning scores, five career goals in the 82nd minute or later and has now equaled a program record for the most career "golden goals" with three.
Senior midfielder Katie Glenn registered her team-leading second and third assists of the season on Hintzen's two scores to improve her season total to five points, while freshman defender Emma Regan was credited with her first career assist on the 23rd minute opener.
Texas out-shot UCF by a 17-11 total, including 11-2 over a stretch combining the second half and OT. The Longhorns also managed an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 6-3 lead in corner kicks.
It took just 51 seconds for the back-and-forth affair to witness its first shot as UCF's Samantha Chung had a shot blocked from the top of the 18.
The Burnt Orange & White quickly settled into the contest, earning a sixth minute corner following hard work on the left side by junior defender Emma Jett.
Following a prolonged battle over the midfield with no shots, it was Texas that jumped in front at the 22:43 mark. Regan started the play with a run up the right wing before feeding a pass ahead to Glenn. The Round Rock, Texas, native delivered a cross towards the right post where Hintzen was waiting to finish from six yards out to make it 1-0.
UCF responded right back during the 29th minute as a lost UT challenge inside the 18 allowed forward Dina Orschmann the opportunity to cross a ball into the middle. Waiting in space just eight yards out was midfielder Zandy Soree, and she scored into the right side of the twine to knot the score at 1-1.
The Longhorns nearly re-took the lead at 31:16 as redshirt sophomore forward Tecora Turner rattled a 14-yard shot from the left side off the cross bar.
The Knights almost located more pay dirt of their own at 32:34 as forward Kristen Scott roared up the right side and fired a seven-yard shot that was smothered by Texas junior goalkeeper Nicole Curry.
With the Burnt Orange & White having the better of possession over the final few minutes of the opening half, Glenn launched a blast at 41:59 that was saved on a dive out to the left of frame by UCF net minder Vera Varis.
Out of the halftime break, UT's offense took charge with shots by Glenn, senior midfielder Kayra Dollas and sophomore forward Haley Berg being blocked, wide and saved, respectively.
A UCF turnover in the back ended up right at the feet of freshman midfielder Julia Grosso during the 78th minute. The Vancouver, British Columbia, product dribbled briefly up the middle before launching a 17-yard strike that was saved out to the right on a dive by Varis.
Both teams earned corners down the stretch, but neither team could find the goal to prevent overtime from being required.
Once in the first extra session, the end came after just 2:38. Redshirt sophomore forward Cydney Billups made a run to the left end line before crossing across the 18. Glenn tried a quick shot that was blocked, but hustled to recover the ball and tap it to Hintzen near the top of the six-yard box. Hintzen made a quick move to her left and managed to beat Varis into the lower right corner to end the 2-1 Texas victory.
