Additional top performers for Texas included seniors Jatarie White - who had 10 points and seven rebounds - and Danni Williams with 10 points, six rebounds and two assists. Junior Joyner Holmes scored eight points, had seven boards and two blocks.
Texas, which led by as many as 13 points late in the third quarter, saw its lead erased as Iowa State tied the game at 56 with 4:12 remaining on a three-pointer by Ashley Joens. The Longhorns went in front 64-60 with 1:01 left after a jumper by Jatarie White. Joens brought the Cyclones within two, 64-62, with 44 ticks left on the clock.
After the Longhorns turned the ball over with 13 seconds remaining, Iowa State was able to set up for the last shot. The Texas defense came up big. Holmes blocked a lay-up by Iowa State's Alexa Middleton that was headed for the basket. The Longhorns held strong for the final five seconds and a jumper by Iowa State star Bridget Carleton went off the mark as time expired.
Play in the first quarter saw back-and-forth scoring, with Texas clinging on to a slight edge. However, with less than a minute to go, Iowa State's Rae Johnson made a lay-up to tie the game at 13-13. Before the close of the period, the Cyclones led by a single basket, 15-13.
In the second period, Iowa State went on dangerous 8-0 run over 1:24 that put the Cyclones up 25-17 over Texas at the 7:10-mark media timeout. With under three minutes left in the quarter, Texas was able to bring the margin back within two, before White tied the game at 26-26 on a layup. White made another basket with 57 seconds left to put the Longhorns ahead by one. An off-the-ball foul by freshman Audrey Warren gave ISU a pair of free throw attempts, where Carleton sank one, tying the game up just before the break.
At the half, Texas shot 46 percent (12-of-26) from the field, 17 percent (1-of-6) on three-point baskets, and 75 percent (3-of-4) from the free-throw line. The team also had collected 18 rebounds.
After the break, Texas energized their play and went off on a massive 15-0 run over 4:26, keeping Iowa State on a long scoring drought. However, in the last two minutes of the third period, ISU's Kristin Scott stepped in with a pair of free throws and two jumpers, bringing the score back within nine points. Then, with a second remaining, a personal foul on Holmes gave Carleton three free throws, and Texas' lead shrunk to seven.
The final quarter featured nail-biting action. Kicking off the excitement was a three point basket by Danni Williams, which brought Texas' lead back to 10. Soon thereafter, a series of Iowa State baskets dwindled Texas' lead, as a Cyclone 6-0 run altered the score to 54-50, with Texas still on top. Back-to-back three-point baskets from Iowa State tied the game at 56-56, with over four minutes of play still remaining in the game. Texas was unable to pull away afterwards, inching by on 1-for-1 baskets with ISU to set up the late-game heroics.
Next, Texas will travel to Manhattan, Kan., to take on the Kansas State Wildcats on Wednesday at 7 p.m. CT. The matchup will be streamed online at ESPN3 and the radio broadcast will be available at 105.3 FM in Austin and at TexasSports.com/audio.
