AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Volleyball senior Micaya White has been selected as one of 30 women's volleyball Division I candidates for the prestigious 2019 Senior CLASS Award® for her efforts both on the court, in classroom, and in the community.
To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must be classified as a NCAA Division I senior and possess notable achievements in four specific areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award® focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
White is the reigning Big 12 Player of the Year (2018) and the 2019 Preseason Big 12 Player of the Year. She was named a second-team AVCA All-American in 2018, a third-team All-American in 2017 and a first-team All-American in 2016. She has been named to the All-Big 12 First Team all three seasons so far and put down her 1,000th kill on Oct. 4 of her junior season. She has amassed 1,384 kills so far in her career, adding 871 digs, 244 blocks and 75 aces.
The Frisco, Texas native has also excelled in the classroom. She graduated with a degree in psychology and a picked-up a minor in sociology in Spring 2019 with a 3.57 GPA. She has been named Academic All-Big 12 three consecutive years and was the Academic Team MVP. She is a two-time Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar nominee, and in 2018 she earned second-team honors. White has earned a spot on the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll each of her semesters at Texas and has earned the Provost Award for having a 4.0 twice.
White has been active within the community of Texas and the city of Austin during her time as a Longhorn. She has participated in Orange Santa, a Texas Athletics-based toy drive; Supply the Teachers, helping fill caring boxes with school supplies for over 6,000 teachers; and has participated in UT & Me: Celebrating Women and Girls in Sports for the last three years. She has also worked with Special Olympics, TexasTHON and Austin Disaster Relief Network and has volunteered with many local schools for fitness nights and volleyball instruction.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship in December.
White and her teammates are scheduled to take on TCU on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. in Fort Worth on ESPNU.
