The Garland, Texas, native has now scored seven career match-winners in the 81st-minute or later
AUSTIN, Texas – On Thursday night in front of 1,176 fans at Mike A. Myers Stadium, senior forward Cyera Hintzen scored the match-winning goal at the 87:34 mark to knock off TCU (7-4-1, 1-1-1 Big 12), 1-0, and keep Texas soccer (8-4-0, 3-0-0 Big 12) unbeaten in Big 12 Conference play.
Important Notes
- The Longhorns played without the services of leading goal scorer Julia Grosso (seven goals in 2019) as the sophomore midfielder was called up to the Canadian Women's Senior National Team for a Sunday friendly against Japan in Shizuoka, Japan.
- Texas improved to 3-0 in Big 12 play for the first time since 2017 and for just the sixth time in school history (2019, 2017, 2012, 2002, 2001, 2000).
- The Longhorns defense hasn't allowed a goal over its last 360 minutes of match time dating back to Sept. 22 against Grambling. The school record is a stretch of 418:40 from Nov. 2-20, 2001.
- Texas has now recorded four consecutive shutouts for only the second time in school history. The last time it was done was from Oct. 12-24, 2008.
- Hintzen's goal was her fourth of the season, the 26th of her illustrious career and her 12th career match-winner (fourth all-time in Texas history).
- Since the start of the 2017 season, Texas has registered 14 match-winning goals in the 81st-minute or later with seven of those coming courtesy of Hintzen.
- Redshirt junior goalkeeper Nicole Curry tied Dianna Pfenninger's school record of four straight shutouts established back in 2008.
- Redshirt junior forward Cydney Billups was credited with her second assist of the season via a perfect delivery on Hintzen's goal.
- TCU out-shot Texas by a total of 18-14, but the Longhorns led 7-3 in shots on goal. The Horned Frogs held a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks.
The Details
It was Texas that created the match's first scoring chance just 37 seconds in as Hintzen launched a shot from 25 yards out that was caught by TCU keeper Emily Alvarado.
The Horned Frogs earned a corner in the sixth-minute that led directly to a header over the bar from midfielder Gracie Brian.
The opening half went back-and-forth with spells of possession for both teams as Texas sophomore defender Emma Regan necessitated an Alvarado stop on a shot from the right edge of the 18 at 13:25.
TCU managed to force Curry into action at 19:53 and 34:16 as shots from midfielder Payton Crews and Brian were caught out of the air by the net minder.
Perhaps the best opportunity for either team over the opening 45 minutes came at 42:30 as a ball inside the 18 dropped right at the feet of Texas freshman forward Sydney Nobles. The Southlake, Texas, product tried a quick flick from eight yards out, but Alvarado raced off her line to deflect the shot away.
If the first half was a back-and-forth affair, the second stanza took things to a different level as the teams opened things up while combining for 21 total shots.
Off a corner kick at 51:35, Hintzen found herself in possession about eight yards out on the right wing. She fired quickly, trying to sneak a shot inside the right post, but Alvarado dove fully extended to make a save.
TCU's offense threatened strongly over the next few minutes, registering six shots over a stretch from 52:55 to 58:28. The best opportunity out of those came off a corner at 53:34 as Brian missed high on a header from the middle of the 18.
Texas came desperately close to a breakthrough in the 56th-minute as a perfect through ball from junior defender Peyton McGee released Billups into space inside the 18. Facing a 1-v-1 situation against Alvarado, Billups just mis-hit her shot as the ball popped up and over the crossbar.
Billups was back at it in the 65th-minute as the Denver, Colo., native took control of the ball and moved middle towards the top of the box. She delivered a promising pass to the left post, but it proved just a foot too far in front of an on-rushing Nobles to get off a shot.
With the Longhorns slowly taking more control of the match, TCU was forced by UT's "D" to settle for shots from distance.
Off a free kick in the 87th-minute, UT sophomore midfielder Kailey Smith nearly picked out Nobles at the left post, but again the pass proved just a little too long.
Finally, at 87:34 the Burnt Orange & White managed to grab the lead. Off a TCU goal kick, Billups ended up in possession about 40 yards out from goal. She took one dribble and delivered a perfect pass around the TCU defense right into Hintzen's path as the two-time All-American quickly finished on the run from 16 yards out.
The Horned Frogs came desperately close to locating the equalizer with seven seconds left as a header from midfielder Michelle Slater rattled off the crossbar before being cleared away by Texas to preserve the victory.
