Redshirt junior forward Cydney Billups scored the tying goal for Texas at the 76:52 mark
AUSTIN, Texas – On another blistering Sunday afternoon at Mike A. Myers Stadium, a West Virginia "golden goal" at the 103:10 mark proved the winner as the Mountaineers (7-4-1, 2-1-0 Big 12 Conference) handed Texas soccer (8-5-0, 3-1-0 Big 12 Conference) its first league defeat of the season, 2-1 (2OT).
Important Notes
- On WVU's goal at 48:18, the Longhorns saw their streak of consecutive shutout minutes end at 408:18 dating back to the start of the Grambling match on Sept. 22. That total represents the third-longest shutout streak in school history.
- Redshirt junior forward Cydney Billups scored her second goal of the season to tie the score at the 76:52 mark off sophomore midfielder Kailey Smith's third assist of the campaign.
- Billups has now registered points in each of Texas' last three matches to equal the longest point-scoring streak of her career. The Denver, Colo., native previously tallied a point in three consecutive contests over a stretch from Sept. 8-15, 2017.
- West Virginia out-shot the Longhorns by a total of 26-17 and led 10-7 in shots on goal, while the Longhorns led in saves, 8-6.
The Details
Texas had the better of the early going as the first shot of the match from sophomore defender Emma Regan was stopped from 30 yards out by West Virginia's Rylee Foster.
After Billups missed wide left from a sharp angle out on the left wing at 9:28, the Mountaineers began settling into the contest.
WVU earned the match's first corner kick at 14:34 and later followed that up with a dangerous spell of possession inside the 18 that saw shots from midfielder Enzi Broussard (22:28) and defender Juliana Lynch (23:27) get blocked and go wide right, respectively.
Back at the other end, junior midfielder Haley Berg (24:58) and senior forward Cyera Hintzen (25:17) each had shots of their own blocked from the top of the 18.
With both teams creating chances, Texas nearly put together the go-ahead play in the 33rd-minute. Making a run up the right side, Billups delivered a pass around the defense and into the box. Hintzen was streaking up the middle and nearly got to the feed, but just couldn't get off a sliding shot as Foster raced out to smother.
Both teams had shots down the stretch of the opening half but nothing troubled the keepers as both Foster and Texas redshirt junior Nicole Curry each made easy catches.
Out of the locker room, the Mountaineers cranked up the pressure, locating the go-ahead goal just 3:18 into the second stanza.
In possession out near the right sideline, WVU midfielder Jessica Lisi lofted a pass towards the left post. Broussard was positioned perfectly and managed a quick flick to tap it past Curry from six yards out to make it 1-0.
The West Virginia advantage nearly doubled off a corner at 51:13 as midfielder Stefany Ferrer-vanGinkel leapt high inside the 18 and headed a shot that rattled off the right post before being cleared.
Curry came through with a big stop at 54:00 as Broussard got clear into space inside the box only to be denied on a shot from seven yards out.
Texas' Berg came close to an equalizer in the 63rd-minute but could only turn a Hintzen cross from the left wing into the left-side netting.
With the Longhorns on the front foot, the tying goal finally came at the 76:52 mark. Freshman forward Sydney Nobles started the play with a run up the right side before crossing into the middle. The pass deflected straight out to Smith, and she launched a 12-yard shot that was deflected straight up in the air. Waiting underneath was Billups to head home from six yards out to tie the match at 1-1.
Nobles nearly located the winner at 85:56 after a through ball up the middle rolled right into her path. She tried a quick chip only to have the ball strike the goalkeeper Foster in the face and take an unlucky bounce out to the right of goal.
With under 10 seconds left in regulation, WVU's defense played a ball back to substitute goalkeeper Kayza Massey. While under pressure from Hintzen, she fumbled the ball back towards her own net. The duo battled in pursuit, but Massey barely won the race, diving on the loose ball to prevent a last-second shocker.
After Texas' Smith hit a 22-yard effort wide left in the opening minute of the first OT, West Virginia strung together a trio shots over the next six minutes that were either wide or blocked.
With the Mountaineers continuing to press starting the second overtime, Curry came through with another huge stop at 100:30, denying forward Alina Stahl in a 1-v-1 situation inside the 18 to keep the match going.
Back at the other end, Hintzen had a shot from 18+ yards blocked by the defense with the ball ricocheting just outside the left post for a corner.
Off the resulting set piece, a Texas turnover led to a quick three-on-two West Virginia break the other way. Once inside the box, defender Nicole Payne had a shot blocked, but the deflection bounced straight back towards the top of the 18. Waiting to pounce was midfielder Addison Clark as she drove an 18-yard shot into the lower left corner to end the contest.
