AUSTIN, Texas — Redshirt sophomore guard Andrew Jones posted a career-high 20 points to lead The University of Texas Men's Basketball team (1-0) to a 69-45 win against Northern Colorado (0-1) in the season opener for both squads on Tuesday night at the Frank Erwin Center. Jones converted 8-of-13 field goals, including 4-of-5 from three-point range in 29 minutes, marking his first extended action since he played 30 minutes at VCU on Dec. 5, 2017.
Jones was diagnosed with leukemia in January 2018 but underwent successful treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He rejoined the team for the 2018-19 season but played in only two games as he continued his treatments throughout the year. Jones completed his final treatment in September 2019.
Sophomore guard Courtney Ramey recorded his second career double-double with 16 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Junior guard Matt Coleman III added 10 points and 6 rebounds.
The Longhorns held Northern Colorado to 45 points on 27.3% FG shooting (15-of-55), including a 2-of-21 (9.5%) mark from three-point range on the night. Texas built a 34-15 halftime advantage, holding the Bears to 22.2% FG shooting (6-of-27), including an 0-of-10 mark from beyond the arc, in the opening 20 minutes.
