The Longhorns used a stifling defensive performance to cruise past the Utes.
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Sam Ehlinger threw three touchdowns and rushed for one more to lead Texas Football to a 38-10 win over No. 11 Utah in the 2019 Valero Alamo Bowl on Tuesday night at the Alamodome. The Longhorn defense was dominant, finishing with 13 tackles for loss and five sacks while holding the Utes to a season-low 10 points.
Key Statistics
- Texas opened the scoring with a 29-yard field goal by Cameron Dicker on the opening drive of the game. The Longhorns went 63 yards in 10 plays before being held in the red zone.
- The Longhorn defense was stifling in the first half. Following the Utes' third punt of the game, D'Shawn Jamison provided a big spark with a 71-yard return down to the Utah six-yard line.
- Two plays after Jamison's big return, Sam Ehlinger connected with Colin Johnson for a five-yard touchdown. The score gave the Horns a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter.
- Texas pitched a first half shutout, allowing Utah to gain only 127 yards of total offense. The last time the Longhorns shut out a top-15 ranked opponent in the first half was against Baylor in 2015.
- To start the second half, the Longhorn defense forced a turnover on downs and drove the field to take a 17-0 lead. Ehlinger tossed and 11-yard touchdown pass to Keaontay Ingram to cap the drive.
- Utah got on the board with a field goal late in the third quarter to trim the Longhorn lead to 17-3.
- Ehlinger and the Longhorns had an answer near the end of the third quarter, driving 75 yards for a touchdown to take a 24-3 lead. Ehlinger accounted for 40 rushing yards on the drive, including a six-yard touchdown run.
- The Utes trimmed the Texas lead to 24-10 with a touchdown drive to start the fourth quarter.
- Devin Duvernay showed up in a big way on the ensuing possession, catching a 37-yard pass and a hauling in a 15-yard touchdown reception to make the score 31-10.
- Ingram punched in his second touchdown of the game, sprinting 49 yards to put the Longhorns ahead 38-10. Ingram finished with 13 rushes for 108 yards and one rushing touchdown. He also had two receptions for 26 yards and one score.

The Valero Alamo Bowl concludes the 2019 season, with the Longhorns finishing 8-5 overall and winning their third-consecutive bowl game. Texas opens the 2020 season on Sept. 5 against South Florida at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
