The Longhorns won nine events and set nine PRs on Saturday in Houston.
HOUSTON, Texas – The Texas Track and Field program won eight individual events and one relay at the FasTrak Collegiate Opener on Saturday, which was the Longhorns' first meet of the 2019-20 indoor season. The Longhorns also set nine personal bests at Yeoman Fieldhouse.
Senior jumper O'Brien Wasome kickstarted Texas' 2019-20 Indoor Track and Field season with a 7.84m/25-8.75 personal-best effort in the long jump. Wasome's leap helped him top the podium in Houston and improved his standing as the sixth-best indoor long jumper in Texas history. Freshman Jathan Belaire, a native of Humble, Texas, logged a 7.26m/23-9.75 mark to take silver in his first collegiate meet.
Three Longhorns advanced to the final of the men's 60-meter hurdles, with Charles Brockman III's 8.08 time topping the field. Isaiah Lucas finished second in the prelims with an 8.19, and Medric Roberson II placed third with an 8.23. The UT trio later swept the podium in the final, with Brockman's 8.06 (PR) edging out Lucas (8.07 – PR) for the top spot. Roberson took third with a time of 8.17.
In the women's 60-meter dash, sophomore Julien Alfred was the fastest in the preliminaries with a personal-best 7.18. She ran 7.23 in the final to stand atop the podium and was six-tenths of a second faster than second place. Her 7.18 made her the fifth-fastest 60-meter sprinter in Texas history, and it was the fastest run by a Longhorn in the event since Teahna Daniels won the NCAA 60-meter indoor title with a school-record 7.11 back in 2016.
Alfred's run was also the fastest over the last 10 years by a D1 competitor in the month of December, per FloTrack's Travis Miller.
On the men's side, Micaiah Harris (6.73) and Belaire (7.00) both earned automatic qualifying spots into the 60-meter final, while Washington Brown (6.81) advanced on time. Harris and Brown paced the field in the final, with Harris running a personal-best 6.67 and Brown setting his top mark as well, with a 6.78. Harris' 6.67 makes him the seventh-best 60-meter sprinter in Texas history.
Freshman Brooke Jaworski continued the trend of Longhorns atop the podium, as she won the women's 800 meters with a time of 2:13.40 in her first collegiate meet.
Kennedy Simon continued the Texas streak with a win in the women's 200-meter dash. She ran the event in 24.02 and finished more than one second ahead of her closest competitor. It was Simon's second-fastest indoor 200 meters at Texas, trailing only a 24.01 she ran at the Clemson Invitational last season.
Jonathan Jones and Jon Maas dominated in the men's 200-meter counterpart, with Jones topping the podium in 21.33 and Maas taking silver at 21.96. They were the only two competitors to run the race in under 22 seconds.
Warren Miller won the pole vault with a 5.15m/16-10.75 mark, the top mark of the sophomore's career at UT. Philip Frank placed sixth with a 4.10m/13-5.5 mark in the event.
The Longhorns wrapped up their first meet of the season with groups breaking out in the 4x400-meter relay. Texas' women's team, consisting of Serenity Douglas, Simon, Alfred and Sanique Walker won the event with a time of 3:39.14. UT's top men's relay team, made up of Maas, Harris, Terry Brown, Jr. and Lucas, placed second with a 3:12.80 mark.
Texas will step away from competition until Jan. 10-11, when the Longhorns return to Yeoman Fieldhouse in Houston for the FasTrak Collegiate & Multi meet. The Horns will compete in Houston seven times this season before the Big 12 and NCAA Championships in late-February and March.
