No. 11 Softball blasts BYU in Tennessee Invite opener, 14-0 (5 inn.)
03.15.2019 | Softball
Freshman pitcher Shealyn O’Leary improved to 8-0 in her collegiate career with the victory
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Another solid Shealyn O'Leary pitching effort and a season-high 15-hit offensive assault powered No. 11/13 Texas softball (23-5) to a 14-0 (5 inn.) rout of BYU in Tennessee Invitational action on Friday afternoon at Lee Softball Stadium.
Important Notes
- Texas has now run-ruled 12-of-28 opponents during the 2019 season. UT is now just two short of tying the 2011 & 2014 squads' program record of 14 run-rule victories.
- The Longhorns sent 10 batters to the plate during the fourth inning against the Cougars, marking the 12th time that Texas has sent at least nine to bat in a single frame in 2019.
- The 15 hits against BYU marked the most for Texas in a contest this season, breaking the old mark of 14 established in wins at No. 15/17 Arizona State and vs. Princeton.
- O'Leary continued the best start for a freshman pitcher in Longhorns history by improving to 8-0. In the process, the Castaic, Calif., native also lowered her Big 12 Conference-leading ERA to 0.43.
Major Players
In all, 10 different Texas players had hits and six registered RBIs in the victory. Redshirt junior center fielder Reagan Hathaway (2-for-2, three runs scored, walk, third HR), sophomore second baseman Janae Jefferson (2-for-3, run), sophomore catcher Mary Iakopo (2-for-2, two runs, fourth HR), freshman shortstop McKenzie Parker (2-for-3, double) and sophomore outfielder MK Tedder (1-for-2, triple) all knocked in two RBIs. Junior infielder Malory Schattle was 2-for-2 with a run and a RBI, junior third baseman Shannon Rhodes was 1-for-2 with a run and her seventh double of the season and sophomore first baseman Lauren Burke was 1-for-4 while contributing her seventh double of 2019.
In the Circle
O'Leary (8-0) scattered four hits, walked none and struck out six over 5.0 scoreless innings in registering her fifth career complete game and first career solo shutout.
The Details
Texas wasted no time making an impression offensively against BYU as Hathaway launched the second pitch of the game over the wall in center for a 1-0 lead.
The Cougars got their first two batters on to start the bottom half of the first on a hit-by-pitch and a single to deep short. O'Leary responded to the threat by striking out consecutive batters and inducing a groundout to first to leave a pair stranded.
The Burnt Orange & White got right back to business in the top of the second, loading the bases with two outs on a Miranda Elish base knock, a Parker double to right and a Ki'Audra Hayter walk. A Hathaway RBI single and a Jefferson two-RBI liner to shallow center boosted Texas in front, 4-0.
With O'Leary in control from the circle, the Longhorns loaded the bags again with one down in the third on an Iakopo leadoff walk, a Rhodes double off the top of the wall in left and an Elish free pass. Junior left fielder Kaitlyn Washington stepped up and hit a chopper to second that was thrown wide of the plate by BYU for an error as two scored for a six-run Texas advantage. A Parker RBI groundout soon followed to boost the UT lead to 7-0.
The first two got aboard for the Horns in the fourth as Hathaway christened the inning on a walk, and Jefferson ripped a shot up the middle. That set the stage for Iakopo, as the Carson, Calif., native lined a single up the middle that got by BYU center fielder Ashley Godfrey for another error as two more Horns scored to make it 9-0. A Schattle RBI single, a Tedder two-RBI triple and a Parker RBI double pushed the Longhorns into double digits with a 13-0 advantage.
Iakopo struck again with one down in the top of the fifth, making it 14-0 by blasting her fourth HR of the season off the bottom of the Lee Stadium scoreboard in left center.
Down to three final outs to try to fight off the run-rule, the Cougars put two aboard with two retired via single, but O'Leary got Godfrey to fly out harmlessly to left to end the contest.
