STILLWATER, Okla. – On a chilly Saturday night at Cowgirl Stadium, No. 21/16 Oklahoma State (26-9, 4-1 Big 12 Conference) scored in four-of-five offensive innings to knock off No. 9/10 Texas softball (30-8, 4-2 Big 12 Conference), 8-0 (5 inn.).
Major Players
Sophomore second baseman Janae Jefferson was 1-for-3 at the plate, while junior shortstop Kaitlyn Slack and junior right fielder Tuesday DerMargosian each went 1-for-1.
In the Circle
Freshman Shealyn O'Leary (11-1) suffered her first collegiate defeat, allowing two earned runs on two hits with a walk and a strikeout over 1.1 innings of work. Senior Brooke Bolinger permitted three earned runs on two hits with two walks and two K's in 2.0 frames of relief, while sophomore Ariana Adams gave up two earned tallies on five hits with two strikeouts over 1.1 innings of relief.
The Details
After Texas left two base runners stranded in the top of the first on a Jefferson single and a Mary Iakopo walk, Oklahoma State quickly ignited a rally in the bottom half. Leadoff batter Rylee Bayless started off the Cowgirls' initial at-bat with a single back through the middle. First baseman Samantha Show stepped up and dropped a perfect bunt past charging first baseman Lauren Burke into no-man's land for a hit as Bayless raced around to third. That set the stage for a safety squeeze from second baseman Madi Sue Montgomery to grant OSU a 1-0 lead. With two down, a grounder that should have gotten UT out of the frame was thrown away to first, allowing Show the chance to cross for a 2-0 advantage.
OSU used to the long ball to boost its lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the second as Bayless and Show hit back-to-back one-out HR's.
In the bottom of the fourth, Oklahoma State's Show made it 6-0 by driving a RBI double to the wall in left center.
Trying to get back in the contest, Texas got a leadoff single from Slack to begin the fifth. UT moved her to second on a sac bunt, but couldn't string together anything else off Cowgirl starter Samantha Clakley to find a breakthrough on the scoreboard.
The end came in the bottom of the fifth as OSU strung together four hits, including RBI singles from third baseman Sydney Pennnington and Bayless to complete the Cowgirls' 8-0 victory.
