Junior defender Emma Jett scored the match-winner with just 2:21 remaining on the clock
AUSTIN, Texas – On Sunday afternoon in the final spring action of the year at Mike A. Myers Stadium, Texas soccer rallied for two goals over the last 8:15 of regulation to complete a 3-2 comeback victory over Houston.
Sophomore midfielder Haley Berg tallied a brace (two goals), to give her a team-leading 10 goals over five spring matches, while junior defender Emma Jett was credited her first score of the spring by registering the match-winner at 87:39.
The Longhorns out-shot Houston in the match by a total of 25-5, including 11-2 over the decisive final 45 minutes.
Texas wasted no time threatening against the Cougars as freshman midfielder Julia Grosso fired a shot just outside the right post in the opening minute.
At the 4:54 mark, the Longhorns nabbed the lead as Berg took a feed from freshman MacKenzie McFarland out of the right wing, and drove home her ninth goal of the spring from nine yards.
The Burnt Orange & White continued to threaten over the next few minutes as junior forward Cyera Hintzen missed a shot just outside the left post, and Berg forced Houston's keeper into a save on a shot from point-blank range.
Against the run of the play, Houston located the equalizer at 16:26 as midfielder Mia Brascia drove home a shot from 18 yards out.
Back at the other end, Grosso forced a diving stop by Houston's netminder in the 19th minute, and freshman defender Emma Regan caused some havoc as her 26th minute cross from the right side was popped up in the air into a crowd before being caught out of the air by the keeper.
Once again, the Cougars struck out of nowhere as midfielder Natalie Anderson took control of a ball about 19 yards out on the right wing and somehow located the left side of the twine to make it 2-1.
Down the stretch of the opening half, junior forward Kyra Falcone had a couple of solid chances go just outside the left post, Hintzen chipped a ball that was saved from 10 yards out and the Longhorns registered three corners in succession in the 44th minute, but couldn't get off a quality effort.
Texas came desperately close to tying things up in the 58th and 62nd minutes as Hintzen chipped one just outside the left post, and McFarland followed with a seven-yard effort ricochet just off the outside of the left upright.
During the 82nd minute, Hintzen came within inches of the equalizer by battling inside the 18 to get off a shot that bounced just outside the left post.
Texas' tying goal eventually arrived at the 81:45 mark as Berg got clear in some space out front and drove home her 10th of the spring to make it 2-2.
Houston nearly jumped back in front during the 84th minute as the Cougars rang a shot off the right post and right into Texas keeper Savannah Madden's hands to clear.
Finally, with time running short, the Longhorns scored the match-winner at the 87:39 mark. Jett drove what appeared to be a long cross from deep out on the right wing over the crowd in the middle and just inside the left upright to boost Texas in front, 3-2.
The Cougars managed one final chance with seven seconds left, but Madden came up with a huge save by pushing a shot up-and-over the bar to preserve the Longhorns' victory.
