Sophomore catcher Mary Iakopo went 2-for-3 to raise her series average against the Sooners to .800 (8-10)
AUSTIN, Texas – In front of the ninth-largest crowd in school history (1,402) on Saturday at Red & Charline McCombs Field, No. 11 Texas softball (36-12, 7-6 Big 12 Conference) dropped in its series finale to No. 1 Oklahoma (41-2, 12-0 Big 12 Conference), 9-2.
Important Notes
- Texas was without the services of freshman pitcher Shealyn O'Leary, the NCAA Division I ERA leader (0.51), all weekend because of an ankle injury
- With a Saturday attendance of 1,402, the Longhorns attracted a combined weekend crowd of 3,903, setting a new record as the largest three-game series attendance mark in Texas program history.
- Sophomore catcher Mary Iakopo had a remarkable weekend against the Sooners, hitting .800 (8-for-10) with two doubles during the three-game series. Over the last 10 contests, the Carson, Calif., native is batting at a .552 clip (16-for-29) with 10 RBIs.
- The Longhorns added three more doubles on Saturday to raise their season total to 80, just six from equaling the school single-season record of 86 doubles set back in 2012.
Major Players
Iakopo led the way for the Longhorns at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a run scored and her fifth double, junior left fielder Kaitlyn Washington was 1-for-2 with a RBI double (her 11th) and sophomore right fielder MK Tedder was 1-for-3 with a her first double of the season.
In the Circle
Junior Miranda Elish (11-8) suffered the loss after allowing seven earned runs on eight hits with a walk and six strikeouts over 6.0 innings. For the weekend, the Crown Point, Ind., native worked 16.2 of 22.0 possible frames against the Sooners.
The Details
Oklahoma struck first on Saturday in the top of the second as a Jocelyn Alo single was cashed in on a two-run HR to left by designated player Grace Green.
The Longhorns answered right back in the bottom half of the second as Iakopo and Washington registered back-to-back doubles to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Sooners eventually added to their advantage during the fifth as Alo drove a three-run HR to left center to make it 5-1.
Meanwhile, Oklahoma starter Shannon Saile settled in from the circle, retiring the Horns in order during the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
In the top of the seventh, OU put up four more runs on a Sydney Romero RBI triple, a Fale Aviu RBI single and a two-RBI base knock from Green.
Trailing 9-1 with three final outs to try to battle back into the contest, the Longhorns again strung together a rally. Iakopo started things off with her second hit of the day, while Washington walked and Elish was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Unfortunately for Texas, a grounder to third was turned into a key double play as freshman pinch runner Jaden Hoelker raced home from third to make it 9-2. Tedder followed with a two-out double off the wall in left to station two Horns in scoring position, but that was all UT could get as a strikeout ended the contest.
