The Longhorns did all their damage offensively with a four-run, third-inning outburst
LAWRENCE, Kan. – On a chilly Sunday afternoon in front of 915 fans at Arrocha Ballpark, No. 11 Texas softball (39-12, 10-6 Big 12 Conference) utilized a big third-inning offensive outburst to complete a league sweep at Kansas (15-32, 3-12 Big 12 Conference), 4-2.
Important Notes
- Texas improved its record when holding opponents to two-or-fewer runs this season to a remarkable 34-1 overall and is now 31-1 when scoring first in a contest.
- The Longhorns have now won 17 straight games over Kansas in Lawrence dating back to April 13, 2008.
- Both sophomore first baseman Lauren Burke and junior left fielder Kaitlyn Washington powered the Longhorns during the series at Kansas by hitting .625 (5-for-8) overall. Burke posted a team-high five RBIs, while Washington added four RBIs.
Major Players
Washington was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Jefferson was 1-for-4 with a run scored, her fourth double of the season and a RBI and Burke was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI.
In the Circle
Elish improved to 13-8 overall after allowing two earned runs on nine hits with no walks and eight K's over her 14th complete game of the season.
The Details
Texas' offense ignited in the top of the third as the Longhorns put up four runs on five hits. Senior designated player Ki'Audra Hayter got it all started with one down by beating out a single to short before advancing to second on a Kansas throwing error. Back at the top of the order, Jefferson blooped a shot just over third that spun away from the Jayhawk outfielder for a double as Hayter scored easily. With two down, Burke drove a RBI single up the middle to make it 2-0. After a Mary Iakopo infield base knock, Washington blasted a two-RBI single to left center to double UT's advantage to 4-0.
Kansas tried to answer right back in the bottom of the third as left fielder Emily Bermel and shortstop Sydnee Ramsey registered consecutive one-out singles through the right side. That was all Elish would allow from the circle, however, as UT's junior hurler struck out her fifth batter of the game, and Jefferson followed a nifty backhanded play to get the inning-ending force at second.
Needing a big rally to get back into the contest, the Jayhawks got something going against Elish in the bottom of the seventh. Third baseman Madison Sykes led off the frame with a double off the wall in center and soon came around to score on second baseman Miranda Rodriguez' RBI single. Base hits from right fielder Jennifer Marwitz and Ramsey cut Texas' lead to 4-2 and stationed KU runners at the corners with two outs. That was close as Kansas could get, however, as Elish got center fielder Brittany Jackson to bounce back to the circle to end the contest.
