No. 7 Women’s Tennis defeats No. 29 Texas Tech, 6-1

The Longhorns claim doubles point and win five of six singles matches in dominant performance on Senior Day.
AUSTIN, Texas — The No. 7 University of Texas women's tennis team recorded an impressive 6-1 victory against No. 29 Texas Tech (15-6, 5-2 Big 12) on Sunday afternoon at the Weller Tennis Center. The match, which marked the final home regular-season appearance for UT's lone senior Katie Poluta, was moved indoors due to inclement weather.
Texas (13-3, 6-0 Big 12) grabbed an early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. Junior Petra Granic and freshman Tijana Spasojevic registered a 6-3 victory against Kennedy Bridgforth and Lana Rush at second doubles. Leading 4-3, the Texas duo won an important deuce point to get to 5-3 and closed out the match in the following game. Texas Tech's duo of Olivia Peet and Reagan Collins responded with a 6-4 win against UT's sophomore tandem of Fernanda Labraña and Bojana Markovic at third doubles.
The No. 86-ranked tandem of junior twin sisters Anna and Bianca Turati clinched the doubles point with a hard-fought 6-4 win against Nell Miller and Felicity Maltby at first doubles. The Turati twins, who recorded their sixth straight doubles win and improved to 10-2 in dual-match doubles play this spring, fell behind 2-0 but rallied to win three consecutive games. Tied at 4-4, the twins held serve and then broke the Texas Tech duo on a deuce point to close out the match.
The Longhorns opened singles play with five straight-set wins. No. 120 Markovic registered a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Bridgforth at fourth singles. Tied at 2-2 in the opening set, Markovic won 10 of the next 11 games to finish the match. Poluta followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Peet at sixth singles to give Texas a 3-0 cushion. The UT senior, who raced out to 5-0 leads in both of her sets, won her sixth consecutive singles match and improved to 11-1 in dual-match singles play this spring.
No. 52 Granic clinched the dual-match win for the Longhorns and improved to 9-1 in dual-match singles action this spring with a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Nell Miller at third singles. Leading 3-0 in the second set, Granic dropped four consecutive games before responding by winning the next three straight to close out her match.
With the dual match decided, No. 39 Anna Turati won her 12th consecutive singles match by a 6-3, 6-0 count against Francesca Sella at second singles. Trailing 3-2 in the opening set, Turati won 10 straight games to finish her win. Labraña followed with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Anto Stoica at fifth singles. Labraña, who improved to 6-3 at the No. 5 line this spring, jumped out to 5-2 leads in both of her sets.
No. 55 Maltby closed out the action with a three-set win against No. 17 Bianca Turati at first singles. Turati claimed the first set by a 7-5 margin, before Maltby responded by racing out to a 5-1 lead in the second set. Turati won three consecutive games to pull within 5-4, but Maltby held serve on a deuce point to win the set. In a 10-point tie-break third set, Maltby won the first seven points of the breaker and cruised to a 10-4 win.
Texas continues Big 12 Conference play when it travels to Waco to face Baylor on Wednesday, April 10. First serve for the Texas-Baylor match is set for 12 p.m. Central.
