Senior Johnny Goodwin was honored as the student-athlete with the highest GPA at the Men’s Tennis finals site.
Orlando, Fla. – Texas Men's Tennis senior Johnny Goodwin was named the recipient of the Elite 90 Award for the 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship, the NCAA announced Wednesday. Goodwin was presented the award at a banquet for the competing teams in Orlando, Fla., on Wednesday night.
Goodwin, a double major in liberal arts honors humanities and government with a 3.93 GPA, is a three-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete and was recently named to the 2019 Academic All-Big 12 First Team. Earlier this spring, Goodwin was chosen as a winner of the Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award, the Big 12 Conference's highest academic honor. He was also recently named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll after posting a perfect 4.0 GPA last spring. Set to participate in UT Spring Commencement ceremonies next weekend, he becomes the first recipient for Texas Men's Tennis since the award began in 2009-10.
The Elite 90, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 90 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships.
Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above who have participated in their sport for at least two years with their school. They must be an active member of the team, traveling and a designated member of the squad size at the championship. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.
