FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Match play is on the horizon for the No. 2 Texas women's golf team, which fired an impressive six-under-par on Monday in the third round of stroke play at the NCAA Championship at Blessings Golf Club. Four Longhorns completed their rounds on Monday, but play was called due to darkness before the round concluded.
Sophomore Agathe Laisne has two holes to complete on Tuesday morning beginning at 6:45 a.m. CT to conclude the stroke-play portion of the championship. The top-eight teams following the completion of the stroke-play advance to the match-play portion. Quarterfinal action gets underway at 8 a.m. CT Tuesday.
Texas surged into the lead in stroke play after an incomplete six-under-par 286 on Monday. The Longhorns currently lead the field by eight strokes at six-over-par.
"That was a great round that we played," Texas head coach Ryan Murphy said. "We got off to a good start and played No. 1 well, which is a really hard hole. I think that just kind of started our day. That was great to have four pars on that hole, and then we made a couple of birdies on 2, and we were off to the races."
Freshman Hailee Cooper turned in her second consecutive round at 69 and rocketed into fourth place with a one-under-par 218 [80-69-69]. Monday's round marked her seventh round in the 60s this season and her team-leading 19th round at par or better. It marked the lowest round in the field on Monday.
"That was just two moving days for her that were huge," Murphy said. "That's incredible to start with 80 and then finish fourth in this golf tournament. Just fantastic."
Laisne, who still has two holes to complete in stroke play, is currently tied for ninth at three-over par for stroke play and even-par for the third round.
Junior Emilee Hoffman [72-79-72] and sophomore Kaitlyn Papp [77-74-72] both played Monday's round at one-under-par and finished stroke play at four-over 223.
Freshman Sára Kousková is tied for 50th with a 12-over-par 231 [78-77-76].
