Ten-time All-American Teahna Daniels (100m) and 2016 Olympic gold medalist Ryan Crouser (shot put) both won national titles and secured their spots with Team USA for the IAAF World Championships on Friday night.
DES MOINES, Iowa – Former Texas Track & Field standouts Teahna Daniels and Ryan Crouser both won national championships and secured their spots with Team USA for the IAAF World Championships on Friday at the 2019 Toyota United States Track & Field (USATF) Outdoor Championships. Daniels emerged from the pack to win the women's 100-meter dash, while Crouser out-threw a stacked field in the men's shot put.
It was Daniels' first national championship and she is the first Longhorn to win the women's 100-meter national title since Carlette Guidry in 1991. Friday's triumphant victory marked the latest in a series of impressive races for the Orlando, Fla. native this summer after she concluded her collegiate career last month. Since finishing fourth in the 100-meter dash at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Daniels has posted a third-place finish at the 2019 Prefontaine Classic, topped the podium at the NACAC U23 Championships in Queretaro, Mexico, and finished fourth in the women's 200 meters at the IAAF Diamond League event in Monaco on July 11.
Daniels was a 10-time All-American while competing for The University of Texas, making her one of 20 women in program history to earn double-digit All-America honors. She joined that list of Longhorn greats by earning a trio of first-team All-America nods (100m, 200m, 4x100m) at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Crouser, a Boring, Oregon native, posted three attempts longer than 21.90m and capped his national-championship performance by launching the orb 22.62m/74-2.5 on his fifth throw. Crouser's put set a new facility record and was .03m shy of matching the meet record, which he set in 2017. The Texas Ex has now won three of the last four national championships, claiming gold in 2016 and 2017, and bringing home the silver medal a year ago.
During his historic career on the Forty Acres, Crouser was a four-time NCAA Shot Put champion (2016 Indoor; 2014 Indoor & Outdoor; 2013 Outdoor), a nine-time USTFCCCA First Team All-American and two-time second-team honoree. Crouser was named the 2014 USTFCCCA Men's National Field Event Athlete of the Year after his national-title sweep and was twice nominated for Big 12 Male Athlete of the Year. Just months after concluding his collegiate career, Crouser won the gold medal in the shot put at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. His 22.52m/73-10.5 effort in Rio set an Olympic Record.
Morolake Akinosun, a 22-time USTFCCCA All-America honoree and 2016 Olympic gold medalist (4x100m relay), was the third Longhorn to clinch a World Championships berth Friday night. She ran an 11.28 in the women's 100-meter final to finish third behind Daniels and English Gardner. Akinosun is pulling double duty this week in Des Moines, as she is also slated to compete in the women's 200 meters on Saturday.
Tripp Piperi, one of two other Longhorns in action Friday, registered a 19.93m/65-4.75 mark on his third, and final, attempt in the shot put. Earlier this summer, Piperi, a sophomore, won the 2019 NCAA Outdoor shot put national championship, becoming the first UT thrower to do so since Crouser in 2014.
Rounding out a quintet of American Longhorns was distance competitor Anna McDonald, who ran a 10:05.03 in the first round of the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. She finished seventh in her heat, and 10th overall, to secure her spot in Sunday's final.
Several Longhorns are slated to be in action on Saturday in Des Moines, including 2019 NCAA Outdoor heptathlon national champion Ashtin Zamzow. Coverage of day three begins at 1 p.m. CT on NBC Sports Gold, and will continue on NBC at 3 p.m. CT.
