The Longhorns return to road action on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT against Colorado on the Pac-12 Networks
DENVER, Colo. – On Thursday night in front of 540 fans at the Denver Soccer Stadium, Denver (2-0-1) scored once in the first half and twice in the second on the way to a 3-0 victory over No. 11 Texas soccer (1-1-0).
Important Notes
- Texas was out-shot by only a 10-9 margin, including 4-2 on shots on goal.
- The last time Texas lost by three goals in a match was in a 3-0 defeat at No. 3 Duke during the 2017 NCAA Sweet 16.
- Junior midfielder Haley Berg led the Longhorns with four shots in the contest while senior forward Cyera Hintzen and sophomore defender Emma Regan managed UT's shots on frame.
The Details
The Longhorns had a big early chance go awry during the third minute as defender Regan started a promising play with a long ball up the right wing. Hintzen raced to corral it and crossed into the right side of the 18. Freshman forward Teni Akindoju deflected the ball into the middle where Berg tried a quick volley only for it to roll wide of the right post.
With both teams registering spells of possession, it was another Texas freshman that managed the match's next shot. Playing her first collegiate game as part of the back line, Sydney Nobles raced out of the back, up the left wing and managed a try from 18 yards out that traveled over the cross bar.
The momentum began to swing in the Pioneers favor over the next few minutes as a Texas turnover in its defensive third quickly resulted in a Meg Halvorson 20-yard shot on goal at 17:56.
DU managed three more shots over the next 4:35 with the last coming on a Hannah Adler 18-yard shot that rattled off the crossbar before being cleared.
Adler finally broke the scoreless deadlock in favor of Denver at 29:24. On a Pioneer run into the top of the box, two Longhorns converged on the player, but a deflection bounced right back out to Adler who fired home into the lower left corner from 18 yards out.
With time running short in the opening half, a quick sprint up the right wing by the Horns resulted in a Tecora Turner 15-yard shot, but her effort rolled wide left.
Texas raced out of the halftime break with some life as Berg had a shot blocked at 47:15, while Hintzen had a 14-yard attempt from the left wing saved on a dive by Denver keeper Brittany Wilson at 50:15.
Somewhat against the run of second-half play, Denver struck for a second at 53:20. Adler found some space straight out from goal and blasted a perfect shot from 25 yards out into the upper left 90 to make it 2-0.
With Texas in need of an offensive spark, sophomore midfielder Julia Grosso tried to provide one at 62:29, but her attempt from outside the top of the 18 ventured wide left.
The Pioneer advantage became 3-0 at 70:22 as a pass from the left wing was played perfectly over the UT back line right to the feet of Samantha Feller. The DU forward managed a quick chip over an on-rushing Madden into the twine.
Over the final 19:38 of match time, neither team could manage much offensively as a Texas corner at 74:06 and a wide shot by Denver at 85:38 marked the only offensive stats.
