The freshman received his first Big 12 honor after winning the Texas Invitational last week.
IRVING, Texas – Texas Cross Country's Haftu Knight was named the Big 12 Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Knight is the third Longhorn to receive the league's weekly honor so far in 2019, as junior Sam Worley and senior Destiny Collins swept the men's and women's awards, respectively, two weeks ago.
Knight, a Tyler, Texas native, sprinted to a 15:01.15 finish at the Texas Invitational, where he picked up his first-career win in just his second collegiate race. The freshman paced a Longhorn squad that claimed the top nine spots in the Men's 5K and swept the field with a 15-point outing. Knight was over a minute faster than the first non-UT student-athlete in the field.
He is the first Texas freshman to be recognized as the Big 12 Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week since Connor O'Neill on Oct. 3, 2017.
