Junior Fernanda Labraña earns the deciding point with a three-set victory at No. 4 singles.
ATLANTA, Ga. — The No. 7 University of Texas women's tennis team earned a hard-fought 4-3 victory against No. 8 North Carolina State in a neutral-site dual match on Friday indoors at Byers Tennis Complex on the campus of Georgia Tech University. Junior Fernanda Labraña provided the clinching win for the Longhorns (3-0), earning a three-set victory on court 4 singles.
The Wolfpack (8-1) took an early 1-0 advantage after claiming the doubles point. North Carolina State's No. 22-ranked tandem of Adriana Reami and Jaeda Daniel posted a 6-1 victory over Labraña and sophomore Marta Perez Mur on court 2. UT's pair of freshman Adri Nagy and sophomore Tijana Spasojevic answered with a 6-4 win against Liz Norman and Lexi Keberle on court 3. N.C. State's top-ranked duo of Anna Rogers and Alana Smith clinched the point with a 6-3 victory against seniors Anna Turati and Bianca Turati on court 1.
Bianca Turati got off the court first at first singles, recording an impressive 6-3, 6-1 victory against No. 18 Rogers to even the dual-match score at 1-1. No. 23 Reami gave the Wolfpack a 2-1 advantage with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Nagy at third singles.
The Longhorns then closed out a pair of matches to grab a 3-2 advantage. Perez Mur posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Norman at sixth singles, and No. 4 Anna Turati followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 31 Smith at second singles. The remaining two singles matches both extended to third sets. Daniel tied the match score at 3-3 after a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 victory against Spasojevic at fifth singles.
Labraña, No. 98 in the most recent ITA national singles rankings, raced out to a 6-0 victory against Keberle in the opening set. Keberle responded with a 7-6 win in the second set, taking the tiebreak by a 7-3 score. Tied at 3-3 in the final set, Labraña broke Keberle to grab a 4-3 lead. The UT junior then held serve and broke Keberle again to close out the 6-3 set win and clinch the match for the Longhorns.
Texas returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 1 with a dual-match at No. 22 Georgia Tech. First serve is set for Noon CT (1 p.m. ET) at Byers Tennis Complex.
