A strong second round on Saturday, highlighted by senior Kaitlyn Papp's 67, rocketed the Texas women's golf team into second place – four strokes back of the lead – heading into the final day of the Betsy Rawls Invitational at UT Golf Club.
After a five-over-par 293 in the opening round that put Texas in a tie for fourth place, the Longhorns fired a season-best 279 in a second round that featured all four scorers finishing below par.
The final round of the Betsy Rawls Invitational is set for Sunday at UT Golf Club. Play begins at 8:45 a.m. CT with a shotgun start.
Through 36 holes, Baylor leads the field with an eight-under-par 568 [289-279]. Texas has totaled a four-under-par 572 [293-279]. Iowa State is in third with a three-over-par 579 [291-288].
Texas' second-round 279 tied for the fifth-best 18-hole team total in Betsy Rawls Invitational history.
"I liked that bounce-back for sure," Texas head coach Ryan Murphy said. "That was a great second round that we played, obviously led by Kaitlyn's 67. Whenever you have four scorers under par in a round, you've played pretty well. I was proud of them for that and proud of the bounce-back. They've put us in position with one round to play. We're four back so we've got a shot tomorrow."
As a team, the Longhorns totaled a field-best 36 birdies and added 109 pars. Texas' scoring average on par-five holes [4.85, -6] was the best of any team in the field on Saturday.
