The Details
Iowa State created a threatening opportunity just 38 seconds into the match as a cross was delivered in from the right wing. Cyclone midfielder Emma Mira raced in, while tightly marked at the near post, but chipped her shot wide right of frame.
After a prolonged battle through the midfield, Texas' offense began to settle in as junior midfielder Julia Grosso managed UT's first two shots by blasting high of frame twice at 11:00 and 13:50.
The Longhorns continued their pressure over the next few minutes as sophomore forward Sydney Nobles (17:03) and Berg (19:33) each forced saves from distance by ISU goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz.
In the 31st minute, Texas freshman forward Presley Echols managed to out-leap a crowd in the middle of the 18 to get her head on a ball, but her shot traveled well wide right.
Iowa State had another chance off a corner kick at 35:32 as the delivery into the middle was deflected towards goal. In a crowd near the top of the six, ISU midfielder Courtney Powell flicked a nine-yard shot on frame, but Madden dove quickly to her right to make a key save.
At 41:16, Texas created another opportunity as Echols played a ball out wide left to junior forward Cameron Brooks. She took a dribble and blasted a shot at Silkowitz that deflected out of the keeper hands and towards the middle of the box. The net minder had enough defensive cover, however, to be able to race out and corral the rebound before UT's Echols could manage any follow-up effort.
Out of the halftime break, UT junior Carlee Allen fired in a shot from 15 yards out of the left wing that was blocked away by the ISU defense and cleared at 46:50.
An Iowa State defender tripped up Berg at 52:37 to set the Longhorns up in a dangerous position just outside the top of the box. Off the free kick, Berg took full advantage as the Celina, Texas, product blasted a 22-yard effort through the Cyclones defensive wall and into the lower left corner to grant UT a 1-0 advantage.
Almost three minutes later at the 56:22 mark, ISU had a solid opportunity for the equalizer as Mira received a pass in some space inside the 18. With a steady wind at her back, she lifted her eventual 15-yard shot up and over the crossbar for a goal kick.
The Cyclones' offense continued to press as Mira forced a Madden save at 66:50, while Powell fired wide left at 68:49.
Off an Iowa State corner kick in the 77th minute, Madden fought her way through a crowd near the top of the six and punched the ball out of any danger.
From there, Texas did a strong job of holding possession and working down the clock. Iowa State did manage one final chance with approximately 40 seconds remaining, but a lengthy header from just inside the top of the 18 traveled on a bounce to Madden as the Longhorns prevailed, 1-0.
