LUBBOCK, Texas – Despite out-shooting the hosts, while striking the woodwork on multiple occasions during the Longhorns fall season finale on Friday night at a blustery John Walker Soccer Complex, Texas (4-5-0) allowed a 54th minute goal to forward Kirsten Davis as Texas Tech (2-4-2) prevailed, 1-0,

Texas dropped to 16-9-4 in its all-time series against Texas Tech, including 6-6-0 in matches at Lubbock.
Texas out-shot Texas Tech by a total of 14-12 in the contest, including 6-5 in shots on goal, led 3-1 in corner kicks and held a 55-45% advantage in possession.

Senior midfielder/forward Haley Berg led the Texas offensive charge with a career-high nine total shots, including four on frame.

The Details

It was Texas with the first scoring chance at the 4:12 mark as a cross from the right wing was driven in towards the right post. Waiting while marked about six yards out was junior forward Cameron Brooks, but her quick attempt deflected off a Tech player and off the outside of the post.

The woodwork came into play again for the Horns at 6:25 as Berg took possession, dribbled to her right towards the top of the 18 and hammered a drive on frame. TTU goalkeeper Madison White retreated a step, leapt up and managed to tip the blast off the crossbar before it was cleared.

With both teams battling back-and-forth through the midfield, it was Texas that registered the next good opportunity at 25:01. Junior midfielder Julia Grosso launched a 20-yard effort from the top of the box, but it traveled just outside the right post.

Tech had its own solid chance at 34:31 as Hannah Anderson tried her luck from 30 yards out, but drove her shot directly into Texas senior goalkeeper Savannah Madden's arms for a save.

Grosso again came close to getting the Longhorns on the board in the 37th minute. Off a cross from the right wing, the ball deflected out of the crowd straight to the top of the 18-yard box. Waiting was Grosso as the Vancouver, British Columbia, native settled it and hammered a blast from 22 yards that was deflected outside the right post by a diving White.

With time running short in the first half both TTU's Kirsten Davis (40:23) and UT's Berg (41:16) rolled shots just wide of goal as the teams went to the break at 0-0.

Out of the locker room, it was the Red Raiders with the first scoring chance at 48:17 as Macy Schultz took possession out on the left side, drove to the middle and fired wide left from 27 yards out.

The scoreless deadlock was eventually broken on an impressive individual effort by TTU's Davis at 53:59. The forward took possession out on the left and moved towards the top of the box. She fired a perfect 26-yard strike into the upper right corner of the twine to make it 1-0.

During the 58th minute, Tech wasted a chance to double its advantage as a cross from the left wing found Davis in clear space near the right post. The pass forced her to lean back somewhat causing her header to eventually roll in harmlessly to Madden.

Texas Tech created a 1-v-1 opportunity at 66:03 as a pass up-field split a pair of UT defenders and rolled directly in the path of a charging Jade King. The TTU forward raced into the top of the box and fired, but Madden had charged off her line and somehow managed to tip the ball away for a huge save.

Chasing an equalizer, Berg took control out on the right side, turned quickly and fired a shot from 15 yards that rolled outside the left post at 75:23.

After TTU missed a header just wide right at 79:34, Berg tried again from 22 yards out at 81:45, but her low roller traveled straight to White.

The Celina, Texas, continued her one-woman assault as Berg missed a header just outside the right post at 85:51. With approximately 10 seconds left, she tried a shot from deep on the left wing, but her effort traveled wide of the upper right corner as Tech prevailed, 1-0.
