North Richland Hills, Texas – The Texas Men's Tennis Team swept the top flights in both doubles and singles at the Big 6 Fall Invitational on Sunday in North Richland Hills, Texas. The sophomore duo of Eliot Spizzirri and Siem Woldeab won in doubles, while Spizzirri was co-champion in singles with freshman Micah Braswell.
In the east bracket of the doubles top flight, Spizzirri and Woldeab defeated the Texas Tech pair of Dimitrios Azoidis and Reed Collier, 8-3, for their title, while sophomore Cleeve Harper and junior Chih Chi Huang came up just short in an attempt to equal them, falling 8-7 (2) to Ilgiz Valiev and Parker Wynn of Texas Tech.
Braswell had a chance to additionally win the doubles title of the east bracket of the second flight with senior Payton Holden, but also fell just short to Sander Jong and Juan Martin of TCU, 8-6. In the north bracket of that flight, sophomores Jacob Bullard and Evin McDonald closed their tournament with an 8-3 win over Justin Bloss and Franco Ribero of Texas Tech.
In singles, Spizzirri and Braswell each downed an opponent from TCU with Spizzirri defeating Jacob Fearnley, in a third-set tiebreaker, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3), while Braswell topped Luc Fomba, who retired in the second set with Braswell up 6-3, 3-0. The win against Fomba avenged Braswell's only singles loss of the fall season.
The Longhorns finished play with three more wins in other flights, including Bullard over Azoidis, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 7-5, sophomore Nevin Arimilli over Connor Johnson of Texas Tech in a third-set tiebreaker, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (4), and sophomore Eshan Talluri over Bloss, 6-1, 6-2.
The tournament closed fall play for the Longhorns, who are scheduled to return to action January 8-10 at the Crimson Tide Invitational in Tuscaloosa, Ala., before their first dual match of the season versus SMU on January 16 at the Texas Tennis Center.
