Senior center fielder Shannon Rhodes delivered the big blow with a three-run, fourth-inning HR
FULLERTON, Calif. – On Sunday morning in Judi Garman Classic action, No. 3 Texas softball (20-3) utilized a key three-run HR from senior center fielder Shannon Rhodes to wrap up its California road trip with a 6-2 victory over Boise State (11-8).
Important Notes
- Texas finished out its California road trip at 4-1 overall with wins over three ranked teams (No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 Washington and No. 13/11 Michigan).
- With 10 K's against Boise State, senior pitcher Miranda Elish struck out 10-or-more batters in a game for the 24th time in her All-American career (13th time at Texas).
- Junior first baseman Lauren Burke posted two doubles against Boise State to give her 12 two-baggers for the season. The school single-season record is 20 held by former Longhorns Paige von Sprecken (2018) and Lindsey Stephens (2016).
- During the five-game California road trip, Texas hit seven total HR's, including a team-leading two by both Burke and freshman designated player Courtney Day.
Major Players
Rhodes (1-for-3, run, HR, three RBIs); Burke (2-for-3, run, two doubles, RBI); junior second baseman Janae Jefferson (2-for-2, two runs); redshirt senior left fielder Reagan Hathaway (1-for-2, walk, run)
In the Circle
Elish (9-3) picked up the win in a complete-game effort after allowing two earned runs on eight hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts.
The Details
After both teams left a runner stranded in the first inning, neither threatened again until the Longhorns strung something together with two outs in the bottom of the third. Jefferson drew a walk and then raced around to score all the way from first on Burke's RBI double to the wall in right center to make it 1-0.
Texas' advantage lasted just two batters as BSU third baseman Bradie Fillmore lined a one-out HR to left center in the top of the fourth. From there, three singles, including a two-out RBI base knock from shortstop Karlee Johnson, handed the Broncos their only lead at 2-1.
The Longhorns answered right back in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-2 advantage. A hit batter and a walk came back to haunt Boise State hurler Kelsey Broadus as Rhodes followed immediately by crushing a three-run shot to left.
With two in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth, after a Jefferson leadoff infield single and Burke's second double of the contest, a Courtney Day sacrifice fly and a Mary Iakopo RBI groundout boosted Texas' lead to 6-2.
That was plenty as Elish finished off the victory by retiring Boise State in order in the top of the seventh on a pair of K's and a fly out to left.
