No. 6 Women’s Tennis defeats West Virginia, 6-1

The Longhorns improve to 21-3 in Big 12 Conference openers.
AUSTIN, Texas — The No. 6 University of Texas women's tennis team earned a 6-1 victory against West Virginia (7-2, 0-2 Big 12) on Friday evening at the Texas Tennis Center. The Longhorns improved to 10-3 (1-0 Big 12) in dual-match action on the year and 21-3 all-time in Big 12 Conference openers.
Texas grabbed a 1-0 advantage after claiming the doubles point. Playing together for the first time, the tandem of senior Bianca Turati and freshman Gabby Cusano registered a 6-0 victory on court 3 against Giovanni Caputo and Nicole Roc.
Junior Fernanda Labraña and redshirt sophomore Marta Perez Mur clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court 1 over Anne-Sophie Courteau and Kat Lyman. Labraña and Perez Mur raced out to a 5-1 lead, but Courteau and Lyman won three-consecutive games to climb to within 5-4 before the Texas duo held serve to close out the 6-4 victory. The No. 80-ranked duo of Adri Nagy and sophomore Tijana Spasojevic held a 5-4 advantage on court 2 against Anastasiia Bovolskaia and Sofia Duran, when UT clinched the doubles point.
All six singles matches were decided in straight sets. Roc registered a 6-0, 6-1 win on court 6 against Cusano to even the dual-match score at 1-1. Nagy answered with a 6-3, 6-1 victory on court 3 over Lyman, and No. 14 Bianca Turati followed with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win on court 1 against Bovolskaia to give the Longhorns a 3-1 cushion. Turati improved to 10-1 this spring at No. 1 singles in dual-match play.
Seeing action on court 2 for the first time this season, Labraña clinched the dual-match victory for the Longhorns with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Courteau. Labraña trailed 1-4 in the opening set before breaking Courteau on a deuce point. Labraña held serve on a deuce point to pull within 3-4, then won the next three games to close out the first set, 6-4. She won the first three games of the second set and cruised to a 6-2 victory.
Playing all singles matches to completion, Spasojevic followed with a 6-0, 6-4 victory on court 4 over Caputo. Perez Mur then closed out the action with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 win on court 5 against Duran. With the first-set tiebreaker tied at 1-1, Perez Mur won six of the next seven points to win the breaker by a 7-2 score. Leading 3-2 in the second set, Perez Mur won the final three games to close out the second set, 6-2.
UT returns to action when it hosts No. 48 Iowa State on Sunday, March 8. First serve is set for Noon Central at the Texas Tennis Center.
