Horns post second-highest single-game point total in program history in opening night victory.
AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas women's basketball team posted a dominant 131-36 non-conference victory over New Orleans Tuesday evening in its season-opener inside the Frank Erwin Center.
UT's 131-point outpouring ranks as the second-highest single-game point total in program history, trailing only a 135-point showing in a victory over Centenary on Dec.16, 2000.
Freshman Kyndall Hunter poured in a game-high 27 points to lead an impressive offensive showing for the Longhorns, which saw five players finish in double figures. Aliyah Matharu (18 points), Joanne Allen-Taylor (15), Deyona Gaston (12) and Latasha Lattimore (11) were the others to post double digits offensively.
Hunter found 21 of her 27 points from behind the arc as she finished the night 7-of-8 on her triple attempts. She was 10-of-14 overall from the field.
Gaston led the team on the glass with eight rebounds and freshman point guard Rori Harmon dished out a team-high eight assists on the night.
UT shot a collective 61 percent (47-of-77) from the floor and 56.5 percent (13-of-23) from behind the arc.
Texas played suffocating defense all game holding the Privateers to just 13 points in the first half. New Orleans shot just 24.5 percent (12-of-49) from the floor and 23.8 percent (5-of-21) from three-point range. Brianna Ellis led UNO's offense with 19 points.
The Longhorns won the turnover battle, 38-12, and held a 53-25 advantage on the boards.
Texas now hits the road as they travel to Palo Alto for an early-season showdown with defending National Champion and No.3-ranked Stanford on Sunday. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. Central and will air nationally on ESPN.
