No. 1 Men’s Swimming sweeps six events on third day of Big 12 Championship

Jiang claimed individual titles in the 100 fly and 100 back, Carson Foster set a meet record in 400 IM and the Longhorns added another meet record in the 200 free relay.
AUSTIN, Texas — The No. 1 University of Texas Men's Swimming team swept six events during Friday's third day of the Big 12 Championship at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Texas enters Saturday's final day of action with 640 points and is followed in the team standings by West Virginia (425) and TCU (417).
Senior Alvin Jiang claimed a pair of individual titles in the 100-yard butterfly (44.91) and the 100-yard backstroke (45.09). In his win in the 100 back, Jiang touched the wall just 0.03 seconds in front of senior Chris Staka (45.12).
For the second straight night, freshman Carson Foster set a Big 12 Championship meet record. On Friday, he claimed the title in the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 3:40.22, besting the previous mark of 3:40.26 set by Jonathan Roberts (Texas) in 2017.
Senior Jake Sannem earned the win in the 200-yard freestyle (1:33.63), and sophomore Caspar Corbeau added a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke (51.62).
The quartet of junior Daniel Krueger, Jiang, senior Luke Bowman and junior Drew Kibler closed the night with a victory in the 200-yard free relay in a Big 12 Championship meet record time of 1:15.76.
Meet Highlights
- Texas swept the top three spots in the 100-yard butterfly to open Friday's finals. Senior Alvin Jiang claimed the title in a time of 44.91 and was followed by freshman Zac Van Zandt (45.98) in second and junior Drew Kibler in third (46.45).
- The Longhorns had the top four finishers in the 400-yard individual medley. Freshman Carson Foster earned the win and set a Big 12 Championship meet record with a time of 3:40.22, eclipsing the previous mark of 3:40.26 set by Jonathan Roberts (Texas) in 2017. Sophomore Jake Foster took second in a personal-best time of 3:40.35, the fifth-fastest time in the country this season. Freshman David Johnston Jr. placed third (3:43.91) and junior Andrew Koustik finished fourth (3:48.21).
- Texas also claimed the top four spots in the 200-yard freestyle. Senior Jake Sannem took the title in a time of 1:33.63 and was followed by senior JohnThomas Larson in second (1:33.91), junior Daniel Krueger in third (1:33.98) and freshman Coby Carrozza in fourth (1:35.64). Sophomore Peter Larson earned the win in the consolation 'B' final and posted the fastest time of the night at 1:32.89.
- Sophomore Caspar Corbeau earned the title in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 51.62. This marked the seventh-fastest time in the nation this year. Junior Charles Scheinfeld placed third (53.06).
- Texas swept the top three spots in the 100-yard backstroke. Senior Alvin Jiang claimed the win in a time of 45.09, the fourth-fastest time in the nation this year. Senior Chris Staka placed second in a time of 45.12, the fifth-fastest time in the country this season. Senior Austin Katz took third (46.39).
- The quartet of Daniel Krueger, Alvin Jiang, senior Luke Bowman and Drew Kibler closed the night with a victory in the 200-yard free relay in a Big 12 Championship meet record time of 1:15.76. The time broke the previous mark of 1:16.48 set by Matthew Willenbring, Maxime Rooney, Kibler and Krueger (Texas) in 2020. The performance also marked the second-fastest time in the country this season.
The Longhorns conclude competition at the Big 12 Conference Swimming Championships on Saturday, Feb. 27 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Prelims start at 9 a.m. CT, and the finals sessions are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. CT.
