Austin – Nine former Longhorns displayed their abilities for NFL scouts on Thursday in Austin. With no NFL Combine this year, it has been the only opportunity for in-person workouts with many teams having multiple scouts on hand.
The group consisted of WR Tarik Black, DB Chris Brown, OL Samuel Cosmi, WR Brennan Eagles, QB Sam Ehlinger, DL Ta'Quon Graham, JACK Joseph Ossai and DB Caden Sterns from the 2020 Longhorns, along with former LB Jeffrey McCulloch.
The day started with measurements and testing with Sterns and Ossai standing out in the vertical jump at 42.0 and 41.5 respectively, while the bench press was highlighted by Samuel Cosmi (36 reps) and Ta'Quon Graham (32 reps). Sterns also produced the top 40-yard dash time at 4.40, with Tarik Black and Chris Brown at 4.53 and Brennan Eagles at 4.55, while Cosmi posted a 4.84 as an offensive lineman, and Ossai (4.65) and Graham (4.94) both clocked under five second for the defensive front. Ossai also was a top performer in the standing long jump at 10-11.5, just behind Black, who hit the 11-inch mark.
"We just proved that we're all real athletes," Ossai said. "A bunch of guys put up great numbers, and we all just came out and proved ourselves and tried to shut out any doubt. I was just going into every event thinking of shocking myself, and I think I did that. We've trained for over two months now, and all the hard work is put in, so it was just time to stay relaxed and go do what you want to do."
Following the testing were the individual drills, starting with Ehlinger and the receivers, followed by the defensive front, the defensive backs and finishing with Cosmi for the offensive line.
"I think for the most part I was really focused on the last portion, the throwing workout," Ehlinger said. "Throwing NFL style routes with NFL footwork and really driving the ball down the field, and I thought it went really well."
"I was really happy with my performance today," Cosmi said. "Bench was something I was not really expecting to get that high, and in the 40, I was hoping to get in the 4.8s, and I was super excited to be able to do it. I think overall I was able to meet my goals and expectations."
The NFL Draft will take place from Thursday, April 29, to Saturday, May 1.
