Men’s Swimming and Diving in second after day two at NCAA Championships

Windle captures the 1-meter diving title, and the Longhorns claim the 400 medley relay crown.
GREENSBORO, N.C. — The No. 1 University of Texas Men's Swimming and Diving team used a one-two finish by senior Jordan Windle and freshman Noah Duperre in the 1-meter diving event and claimed the 400-yard medley relay title to highlight Thursday's second day of the NCAA Championship meet at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Texas enters day three in second place in the team standings with 203 points, just 27 behind first-place California (230). Florida (161), Georgia (116) and Texas A&M (88) round out the top five teams.
In Thursday night's final event, the quartet of senior Chris Staka, sophomore Caspar Corbeau, senior Alvin Jiang and junior Daniel Krueger earned the victory in the 400-yard medley relay in a time of 3:00.23, besting runner-up Cal by 0.5 seconds (3:00.73). The time set a pool record, topping the previous mark of 3:02.80 by Louisville in 2020.
Windle registered a six-round score of 435.60 points in the finals of the 1-meter diving to cruise to his second individual national title, as he previously claimed the platform crown as a sophomore in 2019. Windle registered impressive scores of over 70.00 points on each of his last four dives during the finals. His effort was highlighted by a score of 79.50 on his fifth dive, a forward 3 ½ somersault tuck (107c), and a 75.00 on his third dive, a back 2 ½ somersault tuck (205c).
Duperre placed second with 405.45 points, just ahead of LSU's Juan Hernandez (405.25). Duperre recorded scores of at least 67.50 points on four of his dives in the finals. His performance was highlighted by a score of 73.50 on his fourth dive, a reverse 1 ½ somersault 2 ½ twist free (5335d), and a 77.50 on his final dive, an inward 2 ½ somersault tuck (405c).
Freshman Brendan McCourt added a 16th-place finish on the 1-meter board with a score of 296.15 points in the consolation final. McCourt advanced to the 'B' final after he placed 14th in the morning preliminary round with a six-round score of 310.20. He registered identical scores of 58.50 on his fourth and five dives in the prelims, a reverse 2 ½ somersault tuck (305c) and a forward 2 ½ somersault pike (105b). Sophomore Andrew Harness recorded a 28th-place showing with a score of 283.40 in the preliminary round.
Junior Drew Kibler earned a fifth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, recording a time of 4:10.04. Junior Alex Zettle placed 15th in a time of 4:15.54, while senior JohnThomas Larson finished 16th in 4:16.13. The Longhorns had a trio of swimmers just miss qualifying for the 'B' final in the 500 free, as freshman David Johnston Jr. finished 17th (4:14.36, just 0.26 seconds behind the last qualifying spot), sophomore Peter Larson placed 19th (4:14.58) and freshman Coby Carrozza took 21st (4:15.72).
Freshman Carson Foster claimed a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:40.99, good for No. 3 on UT's all-time performers list. Texas also had a trio of individuals qualify for the 'B' final in the 200 IM. Sophomore Jake Foster finished in 10th place (1:42.17), while junior Braden Vines placed 12th (1:42.71) and sophomore Caspar Corbeau took 15th (1:43.85).
Junior Daniel Krueger followed with a sixth-place showing in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 19.08, tied for No. 7 on UT's all-time performers chart. Senior Jake Sannem placed 41st in a time of 19.84.
The foursome of Krueger, Jiang, Sannem and Staka opened Thursday's finals session with a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:15.82.
The Longhorns continue competition at the NCAA Championships on Friday, March 26 and Saturday, March 27 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Friday's action will feature competition in the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, 3-meter diving and 200-yard medley relay.
Prelims start at 9 a.m. CT, and the finals sessions are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. CT each day. All prelim and finals sessions will be streamed live on ESPN3.
