The Longhorn broke a 36-year-old collegiate record in the women’s long jump at the Texas Relays last week.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 2 Texas Track and Field's Tara Davis was named the Women's National Athlete of the Week by United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday.
Davis broke Jackie Joyner-Kersee's collegiate record in the women's long jump last Friday at the Texas Relays with a mark of 7.14m/23-5.25 (+1.0). Her effort made her the first collegiate woman to break the 23-foot mark legally, and helped her produce the fifth-best jump by an American all-time. Davis' leap was the longest by an American since Tianna Bartoletta's 7.17-meter effort that helped her win Olympic gold in 2016.
It was the second collegiate long jump record in as many weeks for Davis, who broke the indoor record at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 12. Then, the Agoura Hills, Calif. native flew 6.93m/22-9 en route to winning her first NCAA title.
Tuesday's announcement marks the first time since 2016 that a UT woman has been named the National Athlete of the Week during the outdoor season. That honoree was Courtney Okolo, who went on to win The Bowerman later that year.
