Longhorns Micah Braswell and Eliot Spizzirri begin singles play on May 23, while the duo of Spizzirri and Siem Woldeab start doubles on May 24.
Orlando – The draws for the 2021 NCAA Men's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships were released Saturday by the NCAA, including opponents for two singles players and one doubles pair for Texas Men's Tennis in a field of 64 singles players and 32 doubles duos.
In singles play that begins on Sunday, May 23, freshman Micah Braswell will face 8 seed Gabriel Decamps of UCF, and sophomore Eliot Spizzirri will play 7 seed Johannus Monday of Tennessee. Both matches will take place at 5:30 p.m. CT/6:30 p.m. ET. Spizzirri and Monday played earlier this season with Monday winning a close contest, 7-6 (4), 6-4, on Feb. 14 during a dual match between Texas and Tennessee at the ITA National Indoors in Champaign, Ill.
In doubles, Spizzirri and sophomore Siem Woldeab will square off against Rithvik Bollipalli and Jacob Wojcik of South Florida on Monday, May 24, at a time to be announced later. They have already faced each other once this season, as well, with Spizzirri and Woldeab winning, 7-5, on March 27 when the Longhorns and Bulls played a dual match in Austin.
Spizzirri, who is No. 23 in the latest Oracle/ITA singles rankings, is 24-10 overall in singles this season and 17-9 in dual matches, including seven top-60 wins, one of which was over No. 2 Daniel Rodrigues of South Carolina on Monday in the NCAA Round of 16.
Braswell, who is ranked No. 38, has posted a stellar true freshman season with a 35-6 overall singles record, including a 20-5 mark in dual matches. He has played 15 of his last 16 matches at the No. 2 position and has beaten five ranked opponents in that stretch, which includes two top-60 victories in his last two decisions, along with leading No. 6 Sam Riffice on Friday in the NCAA semifinals in a match that went unfinished.
In doubles, Spizzirri and Woldeab, who are ranked No. 11, have combined for a 21-10 overall record this season, including 14-10 in dual matches where they have played at the No. 1 position throughout. They have seven top-20 wins with five of those in the top 10, including most recently over No. 10 Daniel Cukierman and Riley Smith of USC in the NCAA quarterfinals.
The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 23-28 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando after the conclusion of the team championships. Coverage of the individual championships will be shown on the TennisOne app.
