AUSTIN, Texas – On Friday night in exhibition action at Mike A. Myers Stadium, freshman forward Holly Ward, senior midfielder Carlee Allen and junior forward Sydney Nobles all scored goals during a dominant second-half effort to power Texas soccer to a 3-0 victory over Abilene Christian.
Texas Team Notes
- The Longhorns out-shot the Wildcats in the match, 18-5, including 14-2 over the second stanza.
- Even though no stats from the match will officially count, Ward registered her first collegiate goal while fellow freshmen Trinity Byars, EmJ Cox and Lola Stanley were credited with their initial career assists.
- Freshman midfielder Lexi Missimo dished an assist on Allen's 66th minute goal and now owns at least one point in three of her four career matches on the Forty Acres.
The Details
Texas wasted no time creating a couple of early chances as senior forward Cameron Brooks and Byars both fired high of frame during the fourth minute.
Abilene Christian got on the board shot-wise at 6:27 as Natalie Jones had a shot blocked out front by the Texas defense.
In a fairly quiet opening half, Texas registered two more opportunities, but efforts from Byars (18:59) and freshman midfielder Tati Fung (28:09) missed wide left and high, respectively.
Missimo appeared to have scored for the Horns in the 35th minute as her shot from the left side of the 18 rattled off the inside of the left post and rolled all the way across the goal mouth before nestling in the twine just inside the right post. Unfortunately, the official on the far side has his flag up for off side.
Whatever was said in the locker room at the break seemed to inspire the Longhorns, because the Burnt Orange & White exploded out of the half.
It took just 3:23 for Texas to finally get on the board off a corner. Missimo delivered a ball into the middle, and Cox leapt to win a 1-v-1 air battle to head it towards the top of the six-yard box. Byars managed a quick header to her left, that dropped right to Ward's feet, allowing the rookie to blast home a drive from seven yards and make it 1-0.
With the surging Longhorns continuing to pepper the ACU end, it was another set piece goal that doubled UT's lead at 65:17. Again, Missimo delivered a solid corner into the middle of the 18, but it passed over everyone before taking one bounce to Allen in the left side of the box. She took a quick volley from 15 yards out and beat diving Wildcat keeper Lily Foster into the lower right corner for a 2-0 advantage.
In the 83rd minute, the Longhorns finalized their lead at 3-0. A pass between defenders up the left wing was tapped by junior forward Teni Akindoju back to Stanley. The freshman forward/midfielder then delivered a cross right to Nobles in space inside the 18. The Southlake, Texas, product wasted no time scoring from 12 yards out.
Abilene Christian managed just two shots in the second half as Christina Arteaga fired high at 72:27 and wide left at 86:51.
