Senior Richard Ciamarra earns his first conference weekly honor since joining the Longhorns as a graduate transfer.
Austin – Texas Men's Tennis senior Richard Ciamarra has been named Big 12 Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending January 23, the conference announced Tuesday.
It marks Ciamarra's first conference weekly since joining the Longhorns as a graduate transfer this year. It is also the first overall for Texas this season after two weeks of play.
This past week, Ciamarra went 4-0 with two ranked singles wins and two doubles victories with partner Cleeve Harper in a two-match road trip to Arizona. Due to injuries, Ciamarra first moved up to No. 4 singles and defeated No. 53 Herman Hoeyerall of Arizona in a third-set superbreaker, and then moved up another spot to No. 3 singles against Arizona State and downed No. 118 Max McKennon. He also paired with Harper for doubles and again moved up to No. 1 against the Wildcats to post a 6-1 win over Hoeyerall and Jonas Ziverts before they played their usual No. 2 line against Arizona State for a 6-3 win over Murphy Cassone and Jacob Bullard. Texas came close to being able to rally against No. 14 Arizona, but came up just short, 4-3, while against Arizona State, the Longhorns swept singles for a 6-1 win. The two contests were the first road dual matches of the season.
The Longhorns (2-2) return to the court on Saturday to start the ITA Kickoff Weekend when they will host Columbia at 11 a.m. CT and will then play either Oklahoma State or Oregon on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT at the Texas Tennis Center.
