Aliyah Matharu records a game-high 18 points as the Longhorns return to the win column
AUSTIN, Texas — The No. 9/10 Texas women's basketball team returned to the win column Sunday as it posted a commanding 93-58 nonconference victory over UTRGV inside the Frank Erwin Center.
After a disappointing loss to Texas Tech in their Big 12 Conference home opener on Wednesday, the Longhorns (11-2 overall, 1-1 Big 12) regained their footing offensively as they turned in their second-highest scoring output of the season.
With the win, UT finishes their nonconference slate with a 10-1 record, their best mark since the 2015-16 season (11-0).
Junior guard Aliyah Matharu paved the way offensively finishing with a game-high 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting in just 19 minutes on the floor. The D.C. native was 4-of-6 on her triple attempts and also came away with two assists and a pair of rebounds.
Seniors Lauren Ebo and Joanne Allen-Taylor tallied 13 points respectively. Freshman Latasha Lattimore also finished in double figures with 10 points.
Freshman forward Aaliyah Moore was dominant on the glass in the win as she brought down a team-best 15 rebounds. Her 15 boards marked the highest single-game output by a Longhorn this season.
Texas finished the game shooting 50 percent (36-of-72) from the floor and 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from behind the arc. UTRGV finished with a 35.8 percent mark (19-of-53) from the field.
The Longhorns outrebounded the Vaqueros, 51-28, and won the turnover battle, 28-22. Texas held the advantage in the paint outscoring UTRGV, 40-22.
UT came out of the gates fast as they opened the game on a 22-9 scoring run and never looked back. After taking a 48-27 lead into the locker room at the half, the Longhorns used a 30-19 third quarter to put the game out of reach.
The Vaqueros were led offensively by Taylor Muff who finished with 17 points. Maria Llorente finished with 10 points and Sara Bershers led the team on the glass with five rebounds.
Texas is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, Jan.12, as they welcome in Kansas for a Big 12 clash inside the Frank Erwin Center. Tip is slated for 7 p.m. CT and will air nationally on Longhorn Network.
