The sophomore midfielder nailed a penalty kick and dished a key assist in Texas’ 2-1 win at West Virginia
AUSTIN, Texas – A big victory at West Virginia hasn't gone unrewarded for No. 22 Texas soccer as sophomore midfielder Jilly Shimkin earned her first career selection to Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Week on Tuesday.
This marks the Longhorns fourth inclusion as part of the organization's national team of the week in 2022 following previous nods for Trinity Byars (Aug. 30 & Sept. 27) and Lexi Missimo (Sept. 13).
Shimkin helped power Texas to the program's first-ever victory in Morgantown by posting her third career UT three-point effort with a goal and an assist during last Thursday's 2-1 win at West Virginia. The Rockville Centre, N.Y., native now ranks in a tie for second on the Texas squad in goals (five) and third in assists (six).
With the Longhorns trailing the Mountaineers, 1-0, Shimkin stepped up when called upon to take a key penalty at 33:53, driving the ball into the left upper 90 to pull Texas level. Later, during the 58th minute, Shimkin took possession, turned, drove up field and delivered a perfect through ball just inside the top of the box for an assist to Byars who scored the match-winner from nine yards out. Shimkin is now riding a three-match point-scoring streak dating back to Oct. 6 against Kansas State.
Shimkin and her Texas teammates prep to head out on the road for the final Big 12 regular season trip of the year at Iowa State (Thurs., Oct. 20, 6 p.m. CT) and Oklahoma State (Sun., Oct. 23, 1 p.m. CT). Both matches will be web streamed via Big 12 Now at ESPN+.
