No. 1 Volleyball falls to Iowa State in five sets

The Longhorns dropped their first match of the season in a five-set thriller on the road.
AMES, Iowa – No. 1 Texas Volleyball dropped a five-set thriller to Iowa State, 25-18, 25-27, 25-12, 25-27, 15-10, on Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum.
The Longhorns (14-1, 6-1) lost their first match of the season in just their second five-set match. Texas hit .359 in the match and had a season-high 13 blocks, holding the Cyclones to a .273 hitting percentage.
Texas had five attackers with double-digit kills, led by Madisen Skinner with 19 kills and a .350 hitting percentage. Asjia O'Neal had a big match with a career-high 17 kills, hitting .593, and finishing with five blocks and seven digs.
Logan Eggleston had 18 kills and 12 digs, Molly Phillips had 13 kills and five blocks and Kayla Caffey had season-highs with 12 kills and seven blocks.
Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres had her third-straight double-double with 62 assists and 15 digs. Zoe Fleck had 14 digs and seven assists, while Emma Halter had 14 digs and Keonilei Akana added 9.
In the first set both teams benefited from long scoring runs to go back-and-forth. Texas had an early 6-0 run to take an 8-3 lead before a timeout by the Cyclones. Coming out of the timeout, ISU went on a 5-1 run to cut the Longhorns' lead to 10-9. Each team had a 6-0 run of their own to keep it close before Texas ended the set on a 5-0 run for a 25-18 win.
The second set was a nail-biter, with Iowa State using a 6-1 run to rally from down 24-20 to win it 27-25 and tie the match 1-1.
Texas rolled in the third set, 25-12, to retake the lead in the match. The Longhorns finished the set on a 6-0 run and hit .643 throughout the set.
Iowa State won another extremely tight set to send the match to a fifth set, taking it 27-25 again. The Cyclones closed out the win with a convincing 15-10 win in the fifth.
The Longhorns return home this weekend to host West Virginia on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Gregory Gym.
