The Longhorns closed out day one with the lead at the NCAA Championships after collecting a pair of top-two relay results.
ATLANTA – No. 1 Texas Men's Swimming and Diving opened the 2022 NCAA National Championships in record-breaking fashion to take the lead following Wednesday's opening night of the four-day meet at the McAuley Aquatic Center.
The quartet of senior Drew Kibler, sophomore Coby Carrozza, freshman Luke Hobson and sophomore Carson Foster smashed the American record in the 800 free relay with a time of 6:03.89 to claim the Longhorns' first victory of the national meet. Texas' mark bested the previous time of 6:05.08 established by the Texas squad of Kibler, Austin Katz, Jeff Newkirk and Townley Hass at the 2019 NCAA Championships. Kibler (1:30.54) and Hobson (1:30.84) both posted sub-1:31 splits to highlight the UT effort.

Prior to the record performance in the 800 free relay, Texas kicked off the meet with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay with a program-record 1:21.36 from the quartet of freshman Anthony Grimm, junior Caspar Corbeau, and seniors Alvin Jiang and Cameron Auchinachie. The time recorded by the Longhorns topped the previous NCAA, U.S. Open and meet records established by the Longhorns at the 2017 NCAA Championships, but was just behind Florida, whose relay squad clocked 1:21.13 for the victory. Highlighting the Longhorns' effort was Corbeau's breaststroke leg of 22.55, while Auchinachie posted a 50 free split of 18.38.
Texas tallied 74 points to give the defending national champions a 10-point lead over second-place Florida (64). California (61) and NC State (57) round out the top four, while Stanford (54) and Arizona State (54) are tied for fifth.
The Longhorns continue competition at the NCAA Championships on Thursday, March 24 through Saturday, March 26 at the McAuley Aquatic Center. Thursday's action will feature competition in the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle, 1-meter springboard diving and 200-yard freestyle relay.
